Thanks for the informative site, it really helped me decide on the Subc. Sorry for the grainy pic.

Congrats on the engagement and Sub!
I'm with you for sure, but I think I'm in the same boat as Cesium!

Congrats! For the wife and the watch.

I suggested this to my wife (then gf) aces years back. She thought it was ridiculous.
Fast rears, now we have some stones we cannot sell for more than 15% of the price we paid them for,...

As a wedding photographer I can say that guys getting 'wedding watches' is a big growth trend. The brides get to drop a few K on dress, shoes, jewellery etc but guys get nowt, so now they're starting to spend similar amounts on wedding watches.

Engagement watches is a new one on me though. I wholeheartedly approve!

I didn't get a Rolex, but I got a Big Pilot on our wedding day. The Rolex came 6 months after. Either way, I'll take it.

I definitely support the 'watch gift' trend.

Congrats.

I bought her ring and my watch but parted way before she has the chance to wear the ring on her finger permanently! Yes I ended up with a rock on a ring that is worth much much less than what I paid for which made it not worth the effort to even try selling it...now watch is a different story :D If in doubt always go for a Rolex LOL.

As Kilyung said, it's very common amongst Chinese and Koreans. Many friends have received Rolexes at their engagement. To be clear, the tradition dictates that the ring is actually from the groom's parents to the bride and the watch is actually from the bride's parents to the groom. This is probably from when people got married younger and couldn't afford these gifts themselves. These days, obviously, this is not the case.

Also, the bride is supposed to receive the matching ladies' watch (double whammy for the groom). Fortunately, my wife isn't a Rolex fan so I ended up giving her a Raymond Weil Parsifal as a wedding gift instead. I did receive my 16610Y as an engagement gift. My brother received a Omega Seamaster Chronograph when he got engaged and my brother in law (who didn't marry an Asian) got a Seamaster Professional.
