FS: Rolex Explorer II - 1971 Orange Hand - First Generation
FS: It's time to move some of the vintage pieces. This 1971 2.9M 1655 First Generation Rolex Explorer II is known by many names; Orange hand, Paul Newman, Freccione, etc. This is a survivor watch, meaning it has not been fully restored, only serviced twice in it's recorded history to keep it running accurately. The first of the Explorer II's were produced in 1971. They had the straight sweep second hand vs. the lollipop that came a few years later. The bezel of this generation had fat font numbers, that were closer to the edge of the dial than later models. The MKI dial (T-SWISS-T) and hands are original to the watch and are near perfect without tritium flaking and matching patina.
These were not very popular when introduced. The Rolex dealers had a hard time selling them over the Subs and GMTs. So it's not uncommon to see a watch produced in 1971 finally sell in 1975. This watch has the original; punched papers, Explorer booklet, hang tag with matching serial #, "Your Rolex" booklet, official chronometer certificate. It also includes the original ribbon Rolex inner/outer boxes with a stock number on the box that matches the original sales receipt. Though the ribbon box was the one the watch was delivered in, it is not the one Rolex intended for the Explorer II. I think the ribbon boxes ended their run just as these new Exp II were introduced. The movement is the original 1570 and in great condition. It has not been serviced for a number of years but running well. I've been wearing it for a couple of days and have not had to readjust the time. If you were to wear it on a regular basis I would suggest a full service. The original owner decided he wanted a 9315 bracelet from a 1680 sub with the dive extension. So this watch has this much sought after folded link bracelet. I've been using it on one of my 1680's but decided to put the original package back as I had received it. So, for 40 years this watch has had only 2 owners. The original purchaser and myself. If you have interest in the 1655, please contact me for more information and high definition pictures of your choosing. PRICE..........$18500 plus shipping and insurance |
