Captain's Table

My parents just got back from their first ever cruise. My father had always wanted to go on a cruise but my mother took a lot of convincing. As it turns out the both really enjoyed it.

They were telling me about it today and showed me a picture of them having dinner at the Captain's Table...
I was quite surprised since I had always thought that tended to be reserved for people who spent a fortune with the cruise line. As I said this was their first ever cruise, 14 days on a ship that takes 1300 guests, there were only 8 people, including the Captain, at the table.

Is this pretty unusual or is it just luck of the draw?

Good for them Mark. My parents love going on cruises; always trying to get me & the family to join them. Maybe one day.

With a username like yours I'd think you'd be obliged to!

It doesn't appeal to me in the slightest but my mother felt the same way and loved it so maybe I should keep an open mind.

That brings back flashes of my childhood!

I don't think they got fish fingers... They must be gutted!

So was I wrong in thinking it tended to be high rollers who are normally invited?

You were not wrong but if your parents requested to sit with the captain then sometimes thats all it takes especially if your parents were celebrating a milestone.

Spending extra on the top suite rooms wouldn't hurt and repeat customers do get preference.

Did they use a travel agent to book the trip?

Nope, father booked it online direct with Fred Olsen.

They said they were getting a few dirty looks from other people who had been on dozens of cruises!

Then maybe the Captain had his eye on your mother or even your father.

Yes, that's wrong.. They intentionally mix up the Captains Table so there is a variety of folks to make it interesting.. Long time cruisers, new cruisers, newlyweds and a few luck-of-the-draw'w.

Remember, on a 14 day cruise, there can be a dozen "Captain Table" settings, and the Hotel Manager or First Officer handles the second seating, so that means as many as 2 dozen seatings.. Although, occassionally they only offer a couple of sittings..

There is also the "Chef's Table" (although you pay for this), where the Chef hosts, cooks, and presents a custom meal..
