How do they make the Milgauss GV Crystal?

I'm gearing up towards a Milgauss GV as my next potential purchase. Just out of curiosity, does anyone have any idea how Rolex get the the 'green' in the crystal? Is it as a result of pressure treatment?

Perhaps it's the same process for tinting Coca Cola bottles...?!

I've heard they take all the watches to a car tinting place and have them done there. You can't believe everything you hear, but I have a feeling that's the real story with those.

I live in hope that someone here will provide you with the proper answer.

Could be that Rolex are schtumm in regards to the method of making the GV crystal because it has no LEC.

It's however a good question Chris. I've often thought about it myself as I really like the Milgauss GV.

I am no expert but from what I have researched it seems they add a dopant when they make the crystal.

I have heard that it is Irish leprechauns that makes the glass green, and that it can only be done at Saint Patrick's day.

This was also the reason why Rolex had problems delivering enough Milgauss GV's the first year of production. Because of the limited period they can produce the green glass each year.

All sapphire watch crystals are "grown" and are synthetic. During the process I believe that copper is introduced into the latice structure resulting in the green tint.. Yes, the process does include high pressure and heat..

Also, the jewels inside a watch (or rubys) are the same synthetic stone and are tinted red.

I dont think the crystal is really green tinted? It just has green on the edge, so the green looks like it is throughout the crystal.

Much like a clear piece of Lexan that has colored edges, making the entire piece color tinted

That explains why they are more expensive to replace.

So is mine. If it was not, the trashcan would have been the next stop for it.

Perhaps the Elf on the Shelf has something to do with it.
