Nikon D600 Just Announced

It's not cheap, but it's not so expensive as to be a barrier to those who are longing for an entry into the world of full-frame cameras.

Full size sensor with real 1080p video for $2k makes for a great camera. I currently use the D3, D300 and D7000 and will be giving the D7000 to my son, selling the D3 and gettng the D600 and using the D300 as a backup. I'm not shooting as much as I used to so the D600 will be a great blend of full frame, speed and video all in one.

Looks interestning, I bought the Nikon D300 a couple of years back, nice camera too, but now that full frame seems to come down in price my cropped sensor will soon feel obsolete I think.

I'm using a D7000, which I like a lot. I was waiting for the 18-300mm DX lens to become more available and to see some professional reviews before buying. That would be a very useful lens for me, considering the kind of shooting I do most of the time.

The D600 will shoot at 10.5MP in DX mode, which ain't bad, and it also gives 24MP in FX for the FX lenses I own.

It does seem like the best of both worlds, DX and FX, in one camera and for a price that is not prohibitive in itself, although lenses that will do it justice in FX will not come cheaply.

There is one good thing about these announcement and release cycles. Unless you got to have one now, you can sit back, wait for some full-scale reviews, a firmware update for two, wider availability and something of a price drop and not be missing out on much in the meantime.

I'll be giving it some thought.

If I remember correctly, this camera does not have an on board focusing motor.
That would be enough for me to stay away. If you do not have lenses without motors... you will never know the difference.

I got all the lens I need for that camera: The awesome 50 1.4G ...

I can unload my 18-200 and 35 1.8 (which are both DX) and fund a good chunk of the camera. It doesn't sound bad at all right now.

My main issue is weight / size. That's what got me thinking about something like a NEX 7 ... but those mirrorless are not that great for kid photography. I am going on vacation soon, and the idea of hauling my d300 with the 18-200 gives me the heebie jeebies ...

Nice to see another full-frame Nikon. I picked up a D700 used a few months ago - they're incredible value if you don't care about shooting video. FX + wide angle = building and landscape porn.

If that is so, that would be the dumbest move in the history of camera-making. The D7000 has an on-board focus motor.

The Nikon site spec page says that the camera is compatible with D lenses and if my memory serves, that would require an on-board focus motor, as if my memory serves D lenses lack internal focus motors, as is the case with my 50mm/1.8D.

Please advise if this is wrong.

It would still be compatible just you couldn't ever auto-focus the lens w/ that particular body. Doesn't make any sense why it wouldn't come w/ an on-board focus motor unless they're assuming that people will just buy the new lenses.

I would be very surprised if it doesn't. Only the lower end Nikons don't have one.

This from DPREVIEW.com

"Owners of lower-end DSLRs, or compact camera upgraders probably won't even notice, but we suspect that a lot of Nikon users will be pleased to see that the D600 has a body-integral AF motor. This is a feature of Nikon's high-end DSLRs, and allows the D600 to be paired with older, non-AF-S lenses and still achieve AF. "

Of course, it would work because it has an F-mount, but in the compatibility chart, there is no mention of limited function, as there is with other lenses.

Try hauling around a D3, D300 and D700 with an accompaniment of lenses up to including my 300 f/2.8. Now that is a sight.

A little something like this:

After a few days walking around race tracks like that I have to visit the Chiropractor for a couple of weeks.

Unfortunately I couldn't wait and bought the D800 earlier in the year.
For the D600, the inability to do Autofocus Fine tune troubles me a bit as my example of the D800 had this dreaded "Left Focus Blurry" issue, and after the thing was fixed, everything is tack sharp now after doing AF fine tune on all my lenses.

Most likely I'll pass up on this model, but maybe pick up a Sony RX100 as a "always with me" camera.

This is a rumor that apparently started on dpreview.com. Right now, the only reference I can find to this is in the comment section of two articles on the site, so it may be that dpreview.com has changed the text and it no longer exists, except in the comments.

It was challenged many times, but apparently the rumor still has legs.

This is what the Nikon UK site says:
Autofocus Nikon Multi-CAM 4800 autofocus sensor module with TTL phase detection, fine-tuning, 39 focus points (including 9 cross-type sensors; the center 33 points are available at apertures slower than f/5.6 and faster than f/8, while the center 7 focus points are available at f/8), and AF-assist illuminator (range approx. 0.5-3 m/1 ft 8 in.-9 ft 10 in.) [Bold print mine]

http://www.europe-nikon.com/en_GB/pr.../consumer/d600

This from Nikon USA

Autofocus Fine Tune Yes

http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Produc...Tabs-TechSpecs

Perhaps, you are discussing a different feature of which I am unaware and if so I'd appreciate the correction, but as I read it on two separate Nikon sites, the D600 has autofocus fine adjustment.

Yes I've been looking at the DSC-RX100. Its said to be the best compact camera ever made. About $650 on ebay.

Hard to beat that price when the RRP is around $750.

Speaking of heavy cameras ... anybody familiar with the Luma Labs Cinch?

Sure looks interesting for a strap:

I've got a cinch. I'm keeping my RS strap for the time being until Luma finds a solution to my issues:
1. there is no quick release mechanism - a lot of times I need to use a tripod. It's ok to unscrew the bottom screw to attach to the tripod but once I do so, the strap is dangling as it takes a long time to detach the strap from the body ring.
2. the bottom screw - there is no freedom as it's attached to the strap. I have to turn the screw anticlockwise 5 turns before I screw it into the body so that the strap remains "straight". This is unlike the RS strap where the screw is actually hooked to the strap via a ring - total 360 deg freedom.

I've reflected these issues with Luma labs. They know about the issues and they are working on a QR solution. So, once they fix these issues, the cinch is perfect. It "holds" to my body very snuggedly, the camera does not swing around.

Interesting ... if you try to order, there is a 3 week delay .. I wonder if they are working on some of these. I never thought about it, but now that you mention, it all makes perfect sense.

Well, for my cinch, I order in late July, and only got it early Sept. 2 weeks for making, they sent it on 8 Aug, one week to reach LAX, and then sitting there for 3 weeks before arriving at my door in Australia. That can be improved vastly.

This is what I use and I love it.

The Brad is for when days when I'm more active than normal and keeps the strap in a perfect position, regardless of activity.

It's an amazing camera. I just went from the D7000 to the D600 with the 24-120 f/4 lens.
Full frame is really another world !

Yup! Unless you're doing strictly telephoto (where a DX framed camera might be better), FX is the way to go, especially if you're doing any kind of landscape or wider-angle shots. Captures so much with clarity if you use the right lenses.

A little something like this:

Looks like me some years ago . . . and I am a Canon man . . .

And I have several lenses and bodies . . . sold already some stuff . . . but a nice 400 mm f 2.8 . . . or a 85 mm f 1.2 . . . love them both and use them a lot . . . ;-)

And do you know what I did in July . . . I bought a Nikon J1 . . . light . . . terrible fast autofocus . . .

It's not a full frame . . . I know . . . but on a holiday I don't want to run around with 50 lbs of camera equipment . . . been there, done that . . .

BTW the D600 looks great and affordable compared to many other FF camera's !
