Replacing stolen Datejust II

In the spring of 2011 I purchased my first Rolex - a Datejust II, Black Roman Dial, from an authorized dealer in Portland, OR. I was fortunate to get a 10% discount due to the fact I also bought my wife a Rolex at the same time. The list price for my watch was $7,950.

Unfortunately, about a month ago, my watch was stolen from a hotel room in Houston, TX. Thankfully, I had the watch as a scheduled item on my homeowners insurance for the list price of $7,950. My insurance quickly sent me a check for $7,950.

So, I contacted the AD where I bought the original watch so that I can get a new one. She told me the SAME watch is now listed at $9,100. And, they won't be giving me the generous 10% discount I received previously. That means, I will be paying almost $2k more than what I initially paid just 18 months ago for the SAME watch.

Is this normal for prices of Rolex watches to skyrocket in short periods of time?

Welcome Kyle! Sadly that is perfectly normal. You can however find a used one for less than $7950 from one of our trusted sellers.

DavidSW has sourced two DJIIs for me this year, new from AD with full warranty, stickers, complete kit. I'd think he could find one for you with plenty left over for a nice dinner or a very good bottle of champagne to celebrate your loss/addition

Contact DavidSW. He sourced me a DJII earlier in the year with stickers for considerably less than $7950. Of course that was prior to the price increase, but I still think he can beat that price. Drop him an email ASAP.

When you insure your goods you should have them insured for replacement cost, not purchase price.. Sorry about your loss

Excellent advice, Larry! Replacement cost INCLUDING any applicable sales tax.......I was just going to post the same when I saw yours.

To the OP....as well, sorry for the loss of your watch.

.

DavidSW have one for sale actually , less than 7000$ : 116334

Your AD can swap the dial for some hundredth $ , for a total less than your 7950$

As kilyung said it is perfectly normal that the prices rises like that. On the other hand their is an upside to that. Your Rolex will hold its value better wean selling and sometimes even rise in value over the purchase price.

If you buy used (even if it is only 1 month old) you will most often get a great price on it and will very likely be able to sell it for same as you purchased it for or more. I have yet to sell a Rolex for less then I purchased it for, but then again I only buy used. Let someone else pay the price for walking out of the AD with a new watch.

I just had this same conversation with my insurance guy. He informed me that anytime there is a significant price increase that I should get it re-appraised.... As often as Rolex prices increase, I'm not sure I want to get a new appraisal every freaking 6months/1 year.

My plan is to do it when it's a significant jump from where I have it listed now. Like most others have said, worst case scenario check gets cut and I find a better deal on TRF anyways.

Sorry to hear it was stolen, but at least you had insurance. DavidSW will give you a good price. I'd stick with him.

Thanks all. I did have it insured for the MSRP and not what I paid for it. I just didn't realize that the price jumps so much in a short period of time. I'll need to stay on top of it periodically and adjust the insured amount as time goes by. . .

Find another AD. Third Rolex and discount drops to zero not a good way to reward your loyalty.

Sorry to hear about the theft.
I'd try reaching out to the ADs manager/owner one last time to see if they're willing to help keep a customer... Otherwise davidsw will be able to take great care of you.

I ended up going back to the AD, spoke with a manager and was able to secure a satisfactory discount for the same watch. Thank you all for the feedback. DavidSW was also fantastic and very responsive to my request. Thank you David. This forum is great!

So you are bying from the AD? I am sure David was able to give you a better price. Did you just want to get a "New" watch again with the warranty in your name. Just curious. Thanks and cant wait to see the new watch.

Are you choosing the same model again or trying something different?

I'm thinking you could easily do 10% at another AD! Or take one from our sellers here.

I was gonna say dealers are normally not willing to discuss the price over the phone. If you live in the Seattle area, try Alvin Goldfarb as well.

OP......glad to hear you're covered. I'm curious though - how is your homeowners insurance policy written so that your watch is still covered even when not at home? I've never heard of this. Is this normal for all homeowners insurance policies? My watch was stolen while on vacation and I'm now wondering if I'd be able to make a claim through my homeowners insurance.

Any info would be much appreciated.
