Buy from the forum, but I'm sure a all stainless sub will look the best on a young guy like him.

Who are we to judge? It's your son and money!

People steal Walmart bicycles in college. A rolex would be a target. It makes for a great pawn shop fortune for a college student.

Girlfriends, friends, roommates, parties, libraries, dorm rooms, etc.

4 more years and wait for some maturity to develop.

Can you do it, yes (best dad title). Should you do it, not really.

My honest opinion.
I agree. An 18 year old in college with a Rolex will invite problems.

Buy him whatever you want whenever you want it . Only you know the appropriate time for such a special gift.

Minor is a big work. I agree, maybe wait?

I would also wait because like others said college is not the safest place for someone wearing a $8K watch.. I can hardly remember my college days.. he drinks a little too much one day gets load with the wrong person and then there goes his rolex.. It will invite problems on campus.. There are many times I got hammered and do not remember where half my belongings are from last night and it would really suck for him to lose a watch givin to him as a gift..

A lot of sound advice regarding waiting till graduation from college due to security issues. However, if he's going to an Ivy League where tuition is sky high, a Rolex will be like a Casio among the masses of potential others.

College horror stories aside, I guess if he's a responsible kid, he'll be fine in college too...

I would not necessarily wait to buy him this watch. I am in college and I have a 14060M and a Breitling Aerospace. I keep both at school when I'm there (hidden/locked up) and have had no problems. I bought both watches myself and am extremely careful with both. With that said, almost every person I know at school would not treat these watches with the respect they deserve. For example, a few weeks ago before winter break, one of the TAs in my econ classes was filling in and I could barely focus because he kept scratching his SS GMT against the board when he wrote! Despite this, you know your son best, and I assume if you are even considering doing this he's part of that small percentage of people my age who would be careful.

As far as getting a good deal, I would buy used....either on this board or at a local store. The savings are HUGE, and you may even be able to buy one for yourself with the money saved!

Overall, I'd say go for it. I couldn't imagine how happy I would be if my dad bought me one (my dad's a Timex guy, and like you he can afford a Rolex but does not own one himself).

Also, regarding other students noticing, I go to a school with a fair amount of wealthy students and I've found the only people who notice my watches are those who also wear Rolex, Breitling etc
