Wife surprised me and bought me a new steel 116200 datejust on our recent visit to Cabo at Ultrajewels. Doing some research and its serial number starts with an M. Another website indicates this means it was manufactured in 2007. Is it unusual to buy a Rolex that old or did she/we get duped??? Thanks in advance.

The actual watch manufactured date may be later than 2007. The serial number is applied to the case when it's made not when the watch is finally assembled and shipped to the AD. Also not unusual to find NOS (new old stock) of slower moving models at AD's. Assuming Ultrajewels is an authorized AD then your good to go and a full 2 year Rolex warranty is applied. Enjoy the wonderful surprise gift from the wife. How about some pics.

have the Rolex Warranty card listing client # (722), ref.montre (116200), serial number (M plus six digits), and modele (oyster perpetual). Guess I was surprised to find that it was manufactured in 2007/08 and remained unsold till several weks ago. Not fancy by any stretch (no gold, smooth bezel, etc...) and it was on "sale".

Your AD is In mexico ? this watch came from here (#722 code) .

An M serial on those days for a datejust isn't surprising me a lot. AD have many of them, and dial configuration may let it for sale a long time.

Again this is not unusual. It all depends on the market for that specific watch/dial combo in the AD's area of service. It's a new watch and should be enjoyed as such. By the way what time is it?? Haaa made you look

Nothing to worry about as the warranty starts with the sale date. Decades of life ahead with the DJ - October 2007 was the first observed shipment of M cases - but the last one could have been made as late as 2009...

You have the savings + a holiday memory = wonderful...

My understanding is the M series case stamps started appearing in 2007 but that doesn't mean the last DJ with that case stamp was produced in that year. There has usually been overlap in serial numbers.

I'm not one of the experts here but it seems to me an M series DJ would not be that unusual because that model is available in so many dial/bezel configurations. So even though the DJ is a good mover for Rolex, any given watch may sit until that specific timepiece appeals to a buyer more than any of the others.

You didn't mention if the store was an AD. You mentioned your wife received a good deal so maybe because they've had the watch in stock for a while they discounted it. But who cares? Their loss is your gain.

The fact is as far as Rolex is concerned, you have a brand new watch with a two year warranty.

M serials were not seen in the market until into 2007. If is physically impossible for all serials to have been made or sold in a single year, so likely the bulk of all M serials would actually be after 2007. There were no new serial releases in 2009, so both M and the later V were still being made through 2009 and into 2010 or later..

Do not look at an Internet chart to know the date of a watch.. they are not that accurate. It is only a guide when you know nothing else and is then only accurate to a couple of years (an approximation)..

How many digits and or characters follow the M in the serial #? If it is six of all numbers then it is an M serial #. If the M is followed by seven digits and or characters then it is consistent with the most recent random serial numbers.
