Explorer vs. Explorer 2 vs. Sub
I just struck a deal and should have the funds for my first Rolex within a few hours . So my options are:
Explorer 14270 or 114270: Pros- Classic Good size for my 6.5 inch wrist Black dial to go with my white dial JLC Understated Easy to find under 4k Pros- Explorer 2 16570 Polar: Stunning GMT is useful and its nice to have a complication Understated Moderately easy to find under 4k Cons- Cyclops No Date Sub: Pros- Classic Beautiful THE Rolex Cons- Flashy Common Hard to find under 4k Right now I'm leaning towards an Explorer, either one. Which would you guys pick with a strict 4k USD budget? Thanks and Happy New Year!!! |

tough choice , i think the eplorer1 is a classic that will live beside anything you get in the future , where as a exp2 or a sub would be a flipper ... so ,, as a watch to keep , has to be an explorer 1 ,,, the older 36mm one would be a great wrist size too.

All three are great, my considerations:
The 114270 has new features like the bracelet and is a great classic piece. The sub is indeed more common, but that's 'cause it's an iconic piece! The bezel is a usefull feature for timing. I love it! But the exp 2 would be my choice as a one rolex option. It's very, very comfy, tough, under the radar and versitile, dressed up and down! My to go watch. Good luck and keep us informed! |

All three are great IMHO. I would go with the Explorer 36mm.

Explorer 36mm. Really the best of the bunch in my opinion

Well, 2 weeks ago I had all 3.
I've since sold ( to friends) the ExII and the Sub ND. Really like them both, but, to be honest, wasn't giving them much wear time. In my case, the EXII can't do anything my GMT doesn't; the GMT is my first Rolex bought 15 years ago, so it's staying. I have the EXI (36mm) on my wrist now. |

No date sub would be my choice. A classic watch.

as the others have said ... tough choice
i have all 3 and wouldn't like to give any of them up....although i did officially give the explorer I to my father, it was perfect for him! that said, i would recommend the 14270, very understated and unique with the 3 6 9 dial. it has a great fit and fits all situations, i prefer it over its newer replacement. and most importantly, it has no "cons" essentially your trying to choose between 3 keepers, can't lose

Tough choices, but I would go with the no date sub.
I feel that the Exp & Exp II have been trumped by the newer releases (the Exp I less so than the II), but in many regards the case and lugs on the legacy Sub are preferred over the new style by many. |

I'd go Exp II for the date function. For a daily wearer I really use that function

My first choice would be 114270, but you will not find one for 4K. Second choice would be sub but you will not find a decent one for 4k. Don't care for 14270. Third choice would be a datejust. Could get a nice datejust for 4k and it is good size for your 6.5 wrist.

Here's where I stand now: The sub is pretty much out. I am slightly favoring the Explorer 2, but am still interested in the Explorer 1. Thanks for all the great replies.

You won't find a 114270 for 4k but you can find the 14270 so I would go that route if sticking to a 4k budget.

Difficult decision since all 3 are great watches in their own rights. I'd go Exp II for versatility.

EXPII.
I owned one, traded it for "The One," then bought another EXPII because I really missed it. Now I'm on to other pastures, so the EXPII I couldn't live without will be up for sale soon (sorry to say it will not fit your budget!) |

I've had all three, and kept only the Explorers (14270, 16570 black and polar). Although the Sub brought me to this great hobby, I just found it didn't speak to me nearly as much as any of my Explorers. I later picked up a PO which is filled my diver "needs" and thus far, I haven't had any regrets over selling the 14060M. Now, if a Sea-Dweller were to make its way into my hands, I can't say I'd shoo it away....

If 114270 fits your wrist, by all means I think that is the way to go. Cognoscenti's rollie.

I've really wanted to like the ExpI but I'm continually disappointed every time I try. I'd go ND sub if its your first Rolex, that's the most classic/no regrets. The ExpII is nice, but it isn't a sub.
Best of luck though, and congrats on the impending purchase! |

I am sad to report that the buyer dropped out of my sale, its back to waiting for a deal. But, soon enough, I will have a Rolex on my wrist.
