More Rolex'????
I have 2 Rolex' and my wife has one, and I feel fortunate to have them. Will I buy another? Probably not, heres' why. I feel that Rolex makes a great watch but there are plenty of other brands out there to experience. Some as good as Rolex, some better, and plenty of lesser quality. I have learned that you do not need to spend "Rolex type" money to get a nice watch. While I enjoy my 2 and wear them almost exclusively I would like to try others, such as Omega, Baume -Mercier, JLC, among others. Personally, I don't think I could justify the cost of another Rolex anyway even though JLC is right up there with Rolex and probably of equal quality, if not maybe better according to some.
Owning a Rolex is rewarding for sure, but owning a drawer full of them is not for me, especially considering the cost of them today, not to mention the cost of a service when needed. Sure, all mechanical watches need to be serviced, some just less expensively than others. Just want to experience the "fruits" of the watch world while I am still able, you can only wear one at a time anyway. Opinions???? |

Good luck on your journey into the world of watches!
I've been there, done that, AND bought the T-shirt:

I also have had and have some more "sophisticated" watches, was even on a Patek
jaunt for awhile. I came back to the Rolex sport series. Seems like home. |

No, it's not a bad thing...
I agree, it's not a bad thing to keep coming back to Rolex. It's just that there are so many more timepieces to explore. Most people do not get chocolate ice cream EVERY trip to the ice cream store, well OK, maybe some do, but it's nice to try something different once in a while. If you don't like it, you can always go back to what you really enjoy, same with watches.

I kind of lean towards what you're saying Thomas and agree. My dress watch is a Rolex but if I buy another watch it most likely would not be another rolly, it could be but probably not. I remember reading about this man, wish I could remember his name but I can't. There was also a special on Discovery or PBS. He made a very simple, yet elegant Swiss watch by hand, they were his creation, he sold them to exclusive executives and celebrities and only made a few each year, they were exquisite. If I ever find his name I'll post it but I can't no matter how I search for it, maybe I'll look through the Basel registry? Anyway that's my grail watch, someday...

All great choices
Quote:
Baume and Mercier makes a really nice business/formal watch for the $$$$. ETA Movements power the watch; to what degree they are modified I am not sure. The case and dial work is top notch. I have thought about picking one up as an occasional dress watch. As far as JLC goes; comparing it to Rolex is like comparing a 12 Cylinder Ferrrari engine to a Catepillar diesel. JLC is right up there as far as worksmanship with Patek and VC; simply beautiful watches. Kudos for wanting to branch out and try new brands. Not enough people who post on this forum and other Rolex forums realize that Rolex is the "end all and be all" in the horological world.... |

I agree with you Thomas, I only have one Rolex and absolutely love it but I am drawn to other brands as well. I have a few other watches that don't get any wrist time because of the sub. but I still want to experience other brands. I sometimes think about flipping my sub. for something different. I really like the older IWC Aquatimers and their is a couple of Omega's that I want to check out. In the long run though, I am positive that I would return to the sub., it's my favorite of all time. Right now I find myself drawn to the Omega PO, but once I own one for a few months I will want something different. Eventually I hope to own a few other brands that I have not owned already and keep the one that I like the most, which will no doubt be the sub...... I'm personally finding that I am a one watch guy, I don't need 3 Rolex's and would personally feel overwhelming guilt if I had that kind of cash wrapped up on myself when I could spend the cash on my family. You make a good point Thomas.....

i agree that there are other brands out there, does the critics say patek is better\worse\same as rolex? I dont know. I like patek's, JLC's, etc. I think to each his own. If I had a good JLC dealer here I am sure I would own one or two of those as well. I am just a little partial to rolex for watches, bmw's for cars, etc. I applaud you for your feelings that rolex is not the only watch out there, and for enjoying them all.

I love the PO. I just did not like it.
For me the Planet Ocean was like a certain kind of woman who you love but after a short while realize that it is not going to work on a day to day level...
If I had a collection again I would get another PO in a heartbeat. Incredibly well crafted watch. The casework is the first I have seen, short of a Blancpain ff that actually is better than a Rolex..... |

The only reason that I don't have a Omega PO is that it has outer AR coating, I can't stand outer AR coating. I vowed that after I had a Sinn U series with it I would never own a watch that has it again. Outer AR coating is a complete mess, fingerprint magnet, not to mention the scratching that can occur.

It's nice to mix is up. My favorite is my Rolex Blue TT Sub...better than any watch out there (for me). I have other, a SS Sub and a Breitling Emergency. Will I get others? Maybe...Some Rolex, some not. If I could only wear 1 watch for the rest of my life, it would be my Blue Sub.

Watches, clocks, time-pieces of all sorts, in all styles and all price ranges..
That's what makes the "hobby", or "activity" of collecting or accumulating time-pieces one of the most popular and satisfying pastimes of civilized man. If you have a mind to, there is enough variety in Rolex (new, vintage, models) to keep a collector busy his entire life.. or almost any other brand name for that matter. Then too, there are those who collect all brands.. I would encourage anyone to start where their comfort level is....and expand from there if desired.. Good, better, best.... these are subjective terms and battles have been fought about them with no solution... As to cost..well, some people collect Faberge eggs ....you pick what interests you and the price comes along with it.. Primarily, enjoy what makes you happy...isn't that what it's really all about.... |

If you enjoy what you own, and they make you happy, then that is all that matters.

I also like more obscure brands to quietly collect. That said, I'll "out" myself - I have a penchant for older Mido watches, especially the Oceanstar "Powerwind." Nice vintage watches for currently decent prices.
