Moving away from Rolex

Just got this at 50% off list. Don't know to keep it or send it back. Opinions please.

I never had Maurice Lacroix before so don't know how good they are, quality doesn't look too bad. Rolex is really too expensive at £5-6K.

You've been a Rolex Forums member since 07, this is your first ML and you admit you don't know if theyre any good or not, but still you're moving away from Rolex just like that?
Do what ya gotta do and congrats on your piece...

50% off list?? Isnt that more of the question at hand to be focused about?
its not your average Casio watch we're talking about here.haha

Can't tell much from that picture. I love triple calendar moonphases in general as long as the moon isn't too cartoonish. Not that familiar with the manufacturer.

Thought you were moving out of switzerland.

The ML is hardly a sports watch, looks like it would complement your rolex, not displace it?

Nothing could tempt me away from Rolex however much the discount is.

I can think of a number of brands that could lure me away from Rolex but they're much more expensive than Rolex. As nice looking as some models are, ML wouldn't be one of them.

Does this watch have an in-house movement? If so, you did a right thing. ML is one of the few independent watch makers, while sitting on the Tag-not-a-Tag fence, seems to do things the right way. Their designs are fresh and you won't see them in the wild as often as you'd see a Rolex.

There must be a reason why JL has them at 50% off (because they are just not selling).

If you aren't sure, you can probably at least break even if you decide to flip it.

Nice moonphase though.

A couple of years ago I wanted to buy JLC Day Date Month moonphase but it was really too expensive at £6k though I could had it at £4700. Now JL selling ML at 50% is not a bad price. The next day ML must have sold out as it was not listed anymore on their website. For the price other alternatives are Longines, Tag, Oris, Baume and Mercier, I rather have ML and my preference moonphase.

It looks like a nice watch but is not a Rolex.

What kind of opinions did you think you would get in a Rolex forum though. You had to know that 99% of the people would say that it is not of the same quality. Just saying

By what I see that is an ETA movement but a much older watch. Probably why it was sold at 50% off...

My opinion on the watch is that the DATE and HOUR hand are not easily distinguishable which would be a thumbs down for me almost seems like another Baume Mercier.
The 2007 Model referenced in the web page below has the same movement but a bit more pop IMO.

I got the following information from this page:

http://members.chello.nl/~h.mennink/...erpiece.htm#78

ML37: Masterpiece Phase de Lune

78.jpg (33433 bytes)

The Phase de Lune is a long time member of the Masterpiece series. There was also a Les Mécaniques version in 1992 with reference number 13.111.Reference number in 1999 was 37.757-1602 for the two-tone model. The price in Germany in 1999 was DM 3450 (EURO 1763). In 2005 the price for the same watch has risen to EURO 2550, and the reference number changed to MP6437-YS101-19E.

The ML37 is an hand-decorated automatic movement based on the ETA 2824-2, plus a DD calendar module. 25 jewels, blued steel screws, Incabloc shockprotection, polished steel pallet and escapement wheel, Glucydur balance, Nivarox-1 balance spring, Nivaflex-1 main spring. The watch features a full calendar (day, date, month, plus the moonphase)

In 2007 ML introduced an updated version of the Masterpiece Phase de Lune. Like most 2007 updates, the Phase de Lune also got a more 3-D effect.

To answer your question, I have owned the brand. They actually have in-house movements. If you got it half off that's a great deal. Keep it to use it. Not for an increase in value.

Here's another view:

Thanks for the info, which I was not able to find. The watch is still on their current website, so would the movement be an in-house movement?

i thinks thats more of a downgrade.

if i were moving away from rolex. it would be omega for me.

as for your choice, i think a breitling would have been more advisable.

It may be a downgrade but I don't think Rolex is good value anymore for what I get from them. Spending £5-6k I would play away now. Out of my small collection my IWC is my favourite.

If I have plenty of money I might buy a Breitling.

If you buy one you better like it b/c re-sale is rough...even at 50% off!
Most people are getting 35% off anyway.

Buy a watch you like and enjoy it. If you're too concerned about taking a bath when it comes to selling the watch, perhaps, and this is my personal opinion, you cannot afford it to begin with.

no problem with that. i feel like moving away from rolex too. (aside from expensive, they look the same) there are so many other alternatives out there. i see a lot of breitling that can be had at a great price.
