Making a milsub?

OK, not really but I am considering buying a submariner and having a jeweler install/weld fixed spring bars. I generally hate the idea of a modified Rolex but I want to wear the watch strictly with NATO straps. I rarely take watches off and I'm generally rough on them.

I'd live in fear of a spring bar popping off and I am not concerned with resale value. I assume I'd lose the ability to have the watch serviced by Rolex but I can always use a watchmaker for a tune up when the time comes. This is the only mod I'd want to make and I'm wondering if anyone on here has done something similar.

I assume this won't sit well with some members, just putting the idea out there. I don't think there's anything cooler than a beat-up stainless steel Rolex.

I really don't think you need to worry about a springbar popping off. Even if it does, you still have the other one there to hold on to the watch. I've worn my gmt on nato scuba diving, surfing, wakeboarding, snow skiing, and all kind's of other physical activities and have never had a springbar pop off

I'd say don't do it

Your idea is interesting. The best candidate would be a Sub with open lugholes. Maybe pick something that can be bought as a head only in "project condition". Then use 2mm solid SS barstock welded on inner and outer sides of each lug. Have the now "uglied up" lugholes sanded flush and finished to match the case's contours.

Or...get an homage mil-sub to beat up...
