What is it about Panerai...

What is it about Panerai...that grabbed your attention?
I'm a Rolex guy.. but I've recently been looking at PAM 048 Luminor Marina..
The dial and the design of the watch overall is so simple.. yet there is some un-explainable factor that grabs me..

I'm thinking the same way too. But some like a clean dial. Either you like it or not.

The simplicity and heft just form an iconic and enduring design.

It took me a while to like Panerai, but now I just love the simple dial and how it wears. Unexplainable

Simple dial (in most cases). And of course the straps-you can have many looks for relatively few $$.

Let me save you some money. Unless you have <6" wrist, don't get a 48.

Icon7 Welcome to the Panerai subforum

We loves our PAMs. That's because... I forget. But the reasons are numerous. The simple 3-6-9-12 two-hands dial along with an oversized case and that unmistakable crown guard to top it all off, as if the 44~47mm case wasn't enough to catch the wandering eye...
...iconic.

Please take some time to review the various PAMs available and their differences before you put down your hard-earned money.
Historical vs. Contemporary, Radiomir vs. Luminor vs. 1950, sandwich vs. painted/stuffed vs. printed dials, domed vs. flat crystal, base / logo / specialty PAMs, ...

Let me save him some money too. Don't get a 48. Printed dial, cyclops and yeah, about 4mm too small... . But if you like that look, why not... why not look at the 104 instead.

Do measure it when you get the chance. If you've tried a 44mm and feel like it's too big (keeping in mind that Panerai are supposed to be "big" watches) then give the 392 (or similar) a try - 42mm should still give one that famous Panerai presence without making the wearer feel awkward... .

For me it is the simple look and that it is different than a Rolex, I love my Rolex, but the PAM is great too.

I have an 005, I had looked at sandwich dials, mine is painted, both are great, I wanted a seconds hand, so the 005 was perfect for me, plus I stayed within my budget, so it worked out for the best.

I have looked at other PAM's, but probably will stick with one.

To me I remember first looking at Panerai and thinking "those are fugly! and what's up with that crown thingy????"

Spent a few more months looking for a serious diver and the initial love of the DSSD fell away, I almost bought an IWC but then decided on the 243. I just like the way it looks, it's different. Plus it's a smaller niche brand, up my alley.

Let's not forget: strap shopping is just so much fun!

The Luminescent dial at night! Love that. The display case back. I like that the Historics basically have a pocket-watch movement. I like pocket watches. Waterproof and glow. Ever been in a pool at night, hold your PAM up to the pool lights and look at it glowing underwater. It's just cool, geeky, but cool nonetheless. My kids like looking at my PAM glowing in the dark while I rub their backs as they drift off to sleep.

I like how Panerai turns my usual preferences around... polished cases, manual wind, no date, etc...
And the straps are a fun subject by themselves!
