I'm pretty sure the platinum DDII is your grail based on the posts I've observed. I also get the feeling you got it recently although I haven't seen the incoming thread.

I hear all sorts about grails. People say they should be unobtainable or some say they don't exist.

To me the grail is something that is hard to get but that you obsess over. You're constantly looking at pictures on it and reading articles etc.

For me it's a Patek 5496P. I'd have to become much more successful over the next 10 years to afford one and realistically it wont happen. There is a chance I could get it but a very small one and that's what makes it a grail in my eyes.

I don't see the point in saying a grail is unobtainable. Frankly I don't pay much attention to things like the sky moon tourbillon or Vacheraon D'ile.

What is the watch in the background with the Milky Way complication? I recall tripping over this watch on a Google search and learning it costs as much as a fair-sized house?!

What you are talking about is the back of the ref 5002p, it shows the Milky Way as well as, if memory serves, the constellations you see in the sky with the oval ring on the crystal (I believe the whole milky way dial is moving). It also shows the moonphases (notice how it's not on the same level, the phases are shown with another disc underneath the dial that moves to make the moon look more like the real one).

The other watch you may have seen is the reference 6102P (see the picture below), it has the same sky chart complication as well as the same way to display the moonphases but it also shows the date with a hand as well as the mean solar time.

That is the back part of that same watch. It's a true beauty and one of the most complicated wristwatch. It's over $1,000,000. But a watch like this is definitely worth to own. It can only go up.

A Panerai 3646 with a Rolex movement (WWII issued)
I'm only about a 100k short....

I don't really want anything more expensive for my "grail" than a Daytona (White Dial)
Not sure why I haven't bought one b/c they are going up every year.

I used to like very expensive cars and watches until I found out they need expensive maintenance. Rolex is probably the only brand in the world that would buy your way out of a prison in any 3rd world country so I'm good with my sub.

Of all possible reasons to justify owning a great watch like the sub, this is the one you come up with?

After retirement I treated myself to my two grails, an Anniversary Submariner, and SS Daytona (black dial).

Since then my other watches have found new homes since I no longer wore them, no regrets.

For the last year or so I've been fighting the itch to pick up a Sea-Dweller (16600), my last (?) grail.

What is a grail? A piece you want but cannot attain? A watch you have currently lusted over for years/months? Or maybe a watch that you believe is gorgeous but would not in all honestly want to own?

We all know the term grail is subjective, however, for me and my collecting habits a timepiece grail was to obtain a birth year 1655. Some folks associate grail with cost... Not me.

I think grail has now just become shorthand for "the watch I would love to have".

I think it should mean the object, that once secured, ends the search forever (or close).

If someone has purchased their grail watch and then given up on searching for and buying other watches for at least 10 years... then I think that was truly a grail watch for them.

Thanks Sam. I hear you. Maybe I haven't indulged this hobby enough or for sufficient time, but I have yet to set my sights on one watch that I'd kill for if you know what i mean. A date year watch might be a nice idea for me to explore.

Thanks, Max. The 10 year test sounds pretty solid to me.
