Blue Dialed Datejust 116234 Bracelet Choice?

Hi,

I am considering buying one of these two blued dialed Datejust 116234 variants.

I am an experienced luxury watch buyer/owner but I have never owned a Rolex (I know, hard to believe!). I have a few questions regarding the Oyster (72600) and the Jubilee (63600) bracelets with respect to this particular reference.

My impression is that the original 1945 design and its subsequent versions with fluted bezels are really designed to be combined with the light catching jubilee bracelet. The simpler, more modern oyster bracelet is really meant for the domed bezel variant. Obviously, I see folks mix and match these bracelets on fluted and domed Datejusts.

What say you regarding this blue dialed 116234? Which one do you think works best?

My experience with large polished center links like the Oyster bracelet has is they are prone to desk rash scratching. Does the Jubilee hide scratches more in your experience?

So what I am wrestling with is that some convenience features like the Easylink clasp and the sportier nature of the Oyster Bracelet seems attractive to me, but the polished center links that are suseptable to scratching and my sense that it is a non-traditional combination with a fluted bezel causes me Pause. The aesthetic match with the fluted bezel attracts me to the Jubilee bracelet and its scratch camouflage nature are attractive aspects as well.

So I wanted to reach out to an experienced Rolex community who knows these watches best, to get some suggestions and guidance on which combo to go for?

Thanks,

Bob

I'd get fluted bezel with jubilee and domed bezel with oyster. The jubilee is a master of camouflaging scratches! It's also very comfortable and the links are small enough that you can get a pretty good fit without micro adjustments or the EZ link. I wear it a little looser with jubilee/president than oyster to allow for swelling.

The Jubilee catches less rash in terms of long visible swirls. It also is more comfortable in my experience.

They both look great. I think the Jubilee one is the dressier of the two.

Personally, I think the blue dial is sportier than, say, a silver or rhodium dial. If I was going with a blue dial, I would get it with the Oyster bracelet. If I was getting a silver or rhodium dial, I would go for the Jubilee.

I also think the the blue sunburst dial is very bright on it's own. The fluted bezel looks great, but the Jubilee bracelet might also be a bit too much.

Cheers,
Carl

I love the jubilee bracelet. I think it goes perfectly with the style and feel of this one.

The jubilee bracelet is more comfortable, but I'd still take the oyster every time.

Love the jubilee bracelet. It's extremely comfortable and doesn't show scratches. The hidden clasp is elegant. But as a whole, the fluted/jubilee combo is also versatile and looks good with jeans or a suit.

My 23 years experience with a Jubilee bracelet on my DJs has been it is more comfortable and much less likely to show scratches. Absolutely....go with the Jubilee on this model.

Agreed! There is really not a more iconic look for a dress watch than a 36mm Datejust on a Jubilee. Sure, some might think it looks dated, but I call it classic and timeless. The Oyster with polished center links is a relatively new design for Rolex (except on precious metal watches.) The stainless steel Datejust on a Jubilee goes back to the '60s, maybe even '50s. Good luck either way!

I still think jubilee/fluted or domed/oyster is the best combos. So either of them.

Jubilee is great at hiding marks. Have 1.25 link in mine, is a great fit now.

I'm partial to the Oyster bracelet myself. Whatever speaks to you is the right choice though.

I went with the fluted bezel and oyster bracelet (blue dial as well) and I couldn't be happier. Pic in my avatar :)
