Online Sales

For those of you that have bought or sold a watch on this forum or any other, how did you do the transaction where buyer and seller were protected?

I know I wouldn't send cash without the watch in hand and I wouldn't send the watch without the cash. Seems like a catch 22. How did you guys do it, escrow service?

Bank wire

But only after I've done due diligence. Either I'm buying from a seller with a lot of good feedback (check www.watchnet.com Good Guys forum), or I've checked every reliable reference I can find. I absolutely never gamble. A stranger has to prove they are trustworthy, generally through transaction history. And if something doesn't feel right, I don't pursue the deal.

Make sure they have good references and have been around for a while and use a credit card. I just bought an Omega from a post on TimeZone. The guy has been posting for years and I researched him a bit. I should get the watch tomorrow or the next day.

American Express through Google Checkout. It worked out really well as the vendor was top notch - great communications and excellent service and the watch (a Ladies DJ for my wife) is everything I hoped for.

Depends on private seller or online dealer.

Dealers are easy: plenty of folks here have bought from them, so bounce the name for some feedback (as well as the obvious tells, like being responsive with pictures, accepting reversible forms of payment, etc.)

For private sellers, I personally would go with an untested forum member, but only if you get enough verifiable personal information that you can smack them down if you get screwed, as well as plenty of genuine photos of the watch.

I agree that you need to 'buy the seller' as best you can. I rely on references and still use a credit card for protection. When I sell, I treat the buyer as I'd want to be treated...I provide references and contact info and tracking info, etc.

As a seller, I only accept cash and wire (NEVER Paypal). As a buyer, I'm open to using any payment method as long as his references are good.
