Although I've had others in the past, I currently have a No Date Sub as my everyday watch and an SS Daytona as my weekend watch. Since they both have black dials, I recently got the urge for a sporty yet dressier watch and decided on a white dial SS TOG. Now I feel I have a complete, although small, well rounded collection.

My justification is, I call it a passion. We (WIS) just have different priorities. Our priorities are on watches. Some people spend a lot of money on cars but cars depreciate so much. It's good to know that our watches will continue to appreciate.

I really enjoy my watches (6 Rolexes + others). Some remind me of a certain time or place that I bought them (I love getting watches on vacation). After a short while I never think of what I paid for the watch. Plus it's one of the few luxury items that go up in value so if you made a mistake you can flip it later and hopefully not feel much pain.

It's a hobby. It's a passion. Call it what ever you will. It's about the only thing I can think of one can enjoy 24/7. Whether you have one or several it's all about the joy of watches, their history, etc....
I have watches I seldom wear. Doesn't mean I enjoy them less. They represent something special to me. I don't justify it--I enjoy it. Rare coin collectors don't spend their coins (ok maybe once LOL!) Rare stamp collectors don't mail a letter with their stamps. I can wear a desirable watch---and do it again tomorrow. |

I imagine you can justify whatever number of watches you desire. Just a guess, but I'd think with the members of this forum the biggest justification is financial. How may $5k+ watches can you afford? How many can you own before 'lack of wrist time' becomes an issue? Of course, the answer is different for all of us. Luckily for me I have a very understanding wife that understands my passion for watches. She makes my justification for fine timepieces enjoyable

A great question that I have been struggling with lately. I generally get one primary watch and wear it for years. When I look at my SD I can't imagine wearing another watch and it was my grail until I allowed the warped thinking here to distort my brain.
Now I want a GMT with a jubilee bracelet, clear caseback Speedy, Breitling Navitimer and don't get me started on a red 1680. I need help. |
