black MOP question on wife's new watch??
Hey everyone, I have a question about a watch I just bought for my wife for Christmas...I just bought her an Everose/TT midsize datejust with black MOP/diamond dial and oyster bracelet...The watch is beautiful but I noticed near the top of the dial that there is a clear "line" which is actually kind of a wavy line in the mother of pearl that runs all the way across the dial? Is this normal in a MOP dial? I have a black MOP yacht and do not have any "lines" like that in my dial nor have I ever seen lines like that in any other MOP dial? I was thinking that it is just the natural look of the MOP kind of like if you were to look at the underside of a seashell you would see lines or striations like that. Anyone seen something like this before??
Thanks! |

Well, I haven't personally seen such a "flaw" before, but I wouldn't mind too much about it since MOP is a natural material and tiny "irregularities" are only to be expected. But if you think there is a QC issue, I suggest you take it to your AD to have the dial exchanged.

Who decides if it is a "flaw" or not? And should I have a problem trying to get the dial exchanged? Is that something the AD would send back to have exchanged or something I would have to send back to Rolex?

If you or your wife are unhappy then take it back and have them check it out. Especially if it looks cracked. Make it right.

would a crack be something that Rolex would let leave the factory? Or is that almost normal because of the dial makeup itself? I'll try to get pics on here this morning to see if that will help..

It is a Natural Flaw in MOP.
I have a Diamond dial White Mop DJ - The dark ridge running down the face is a natural 'ridge/flaw '- but thats what I liked about it. Yours is more prominent maybe due to the Taihesian MOP - the colours either side of the line indicate to me its natural and not a crack. |

does that mean it can't or won't be switched out by the AD/Rolex if it is a natural ridge?

Well, strictly taken, Rolex ought to source out even the "naturally flawed" dials during QC, so I would take the watch to your AD and hear what he can do for you.
Natural flaw or damage, either way I feel you and your wife are not happy with it, and in that case I would try to have it exchanged to your satisfaction.

If your not happy - take it back to your AD and put your case to him.
It is natural - so it can be argued both ways. |

My wife has a black MOP dial on her WG date-just. She has never seen another that looks anything like hers (and we have been in hundreds of AD's) that's what makes the MOP so special.

Hi,
With MOP dials, no two are ever identical and this is one of the attractions of the MOP dial - you wont see another Rolex with the same dial. Rolex QC would have used that dial as it met their MOP QC criteria. IMO, I don't think the dial is damaged. It just has more variation that some MOP dials have. This is an issue that should have been seen and considered at the point of purchase and IMO I don't see you have a reason for asking Rolex to 'fix' something that is not a fault. If it is a crack or a fault with the metal to MOP interface then it becomes a quality isssue and I am sure that Rolex will replace the dial for you.

What might look like an "irregularity" is a natural part of the MOP from the ones I have seen. I nearly bought one in the Fall and it had a line through the middle like you describe, but it didn't suggest "flaw" to me.
