Shipping Insurance
I purchased a watch on Ebay from a seller 72 Red Sub. The seller says after the he accepted my offer he wants a bank wire of the funds, but there is no mention of this in the listing. It does says he accepts paypal.
The sellers says he uses G4SI for insurance and they don"t cover shipping to Canada. Does anyone know anything about this? Is there international insurance available for shipping from the US into Canada. I want to finish my deal and buy the watch, but I don't want to bank wire the money especially knowing that this wasn't part of the origianl deal. Ebay lsiting below http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...:X:RTQ:US:1123 Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing. Thanks Robert |

Ad clearly states that they ship to US address only but he didn't block bidders from foreign countries. Why did you bid knowing this?
He can ship by USPS EMS and insure it but the maximum amount of insurance available is $5,000. Shipping isn't the problem, insurance is. You can ship by FedEx and insure for full amount but if you have to file a claim the limit of liability is $500 because it's jewelry. Some countries prohibit the import of watches so even if you do insure for full amount and have to file a claim you get nothing because you shipped a prohibited item. Shipping high-value stuff internationally is a mess. People who ship internationally have special insurance. You might try finding a seller here who ships internationally and pay them to be an intermediary. Seller ships to intermediary, intermediary ships to you. .

Czeckman, the lisitng is confusing and contradictory he says he ships to north and south america so I bid I didn't see the other part until after he accepted. The intermediary sounds complicated but, i will check it out. Can you recommend a intermediary
Passionata I will check out your idea as well. How does it differ for insurrance if I ship the watch in or if he ships it am I able to purchase more insurance. The seller is concerned about losing the watch, buyer scams whatever they are With either of these ideas do I use paypal. the seller checks out fine but I don't want bank wire the money without some kinda of recourse |

I would not follow through with this sale and get Ebay involved to get it cancelled.
Claims to take paypal and then wants a wire...that is not a good sign. You also need better pictures of the dial, unobstructed! Another red sign, a "15% restocking fee"...that is well in excess of $1K... Continue at your own risk... |

Run Forest, run.
Refusing to take PayPal is a violation of Ebay rules so you can easily invalidate this transaction by notifying Ebay that the seller won't take PayPal as he states. PayPal also offers you a level of protection that you don't get from a wire transfer. You should have never bid on this thing. Seller repeated states US shipping only "Don't ask". Read the terms before you commit to buy.

I would get a better picture of the dial, one in which the hands don't obscure the writing. The writing, specifically the depth rating and chronometer don't look right to me. I will caveat this by saying I am by no means a Red Sub expert or even all that knowledgeable. This should be a Mark 4 dial. Hopefully the experts will join in shortly.

And rather than gamble with Ebay which isn't a good gamble IMHO buy from a strong seller with strong reputation like Andrew Shear or Eric Ku. See the sticky of vintage dealers.

I am currently searching for a vintage submariner myself and I noticed quite a few ads like this, where they list paypal, but in the write up state they only want a wire transfer. It is unfortunate that you found the piece you wanted, negotiated a price, and now it looks like the deal may fall apart. I'm sure it is dissappointing, but better than getting swindled. Good luck. |

I'm pretty sure the dial is a IV and is in pretty good shape

Please tread careful.
If you look at the pictures on the album. The picture of the dial with the movement out of the watch IS NOT the same dial. Have him send you a close up of the picture of the watch he is selling you, but a CLOSE UP! |

I understand.
Is the third photo, showing the caseback and movement belong to the watch on Ebay? |

I think everyone here is trying to help you.
My reason for asking is because the Ebay listing says it is a 1971 and the caseback displays a "72" date. As long as you are happy and comfortable with the sale, that is all that matters... |

A shipping solution I just thought of will be to ship the watch in 2 separate boxes watch in one and the band in the other Each box carries it own policy splitting the value which should eliminate the $5000 maximum insurance problem.

The seller somehow got the insurance in order and has shipped the watch. I'm very excited to say the least. Hopefully all is well.
