Well,I dreamed of it since I was 15-16 years old when I saw solid gold Submariner on some family friend`s wrist. So,I started to picking information about brand and,BEFORE I even bought my Explorer II,I was already a big fan of brand,of their history and of course of those in-house made movements. At the first I wanted to buy SS Datejust, but when I first saw white dial Expy II I knew that it was love at first sight!
And now I`m an example of acute Rolexitis and most of the time I`m making plans HOW to get some company for my Explorer II.Crazy! |

I could care less about the celebs. I bought mine for two reasons:
1. rolex is the only brand of watch I like the looks of. 2. rolex is "the watch of watches" and I always wanted one.

It looks like passion is the front runner for TRF members... as it should be
I'm not a celeb follower, but I do think it is interesting how some become associated with the Rolex brand.. Perhaps their driving force is passion too.. Say like Steve McQueen and his ever present Sub..

It was interesting the see a white face SS Daytona in Oceans 13 worn by Brad Pitt. There were many shots with that watch was jumping off the screen. I also just watch the new National Treasure, Book of Secrets. Nicolas Cage had plenty of shots with the Submariner, however this time he didn't mention it so bluntly as he did in the first National Treasure.
I am not sure how this influences the brand, but I doubt if most people pick up on these things. I know from the group I went with to watch the movies, I was the only one that noticed it. W

Pull up a chair, pour yourself a drink and cancel all your appointments. T'was in the early 70's and I was strolling through a shopping district with my parents and we stopped at the same AD I bought my 16610 in 2000. My father looked at the watches and exclaimed that he never would pay that much money for a simple steel watch. I became interested and started to ask (and get) catalogues. I dreamt away while reading the catalogue and really liked the Sub and SD. 'Underwater habitat' indeed. But as the years went by they stayed out of reach because of the elevated price. While I was in the military and stationed in Lebanon in 1979 and 1980 I scraped the $$$ together to buy a Sub but the tradesman I wanted to deal with couldn't deliver. Back from the service I bought a Santos Dumont and after that a Tank Vermeil.
But the Sub kept hunting me and after being on a waiting list for over 3 months I finally was able to purchase a 16610, the first series with SEL band.

[QUOTE=Tools;395470]So you bought yourself a new/used Rolex....
Well, good for you Did you get it just because you saw your favorite celeb wearing one ? Or did you buy it for the horological significance of the brand ? Or was there another reason ? ..............Why ??Rolex, because of their heritage, ruggedness, excellent resale,no frills design, social flare and timeless style! C'mon...it's a simple question :cheers |

My standard answer:
Nifty little machine. Hand made, over a hundred pieces moving in near perfect harmony in a rugged container that can endure outrageous temperature extremes and harsh environments. Love the fact that it's constructed entirely in house. Who wouldn't want a watch like that.

Ron, I second you statement I am down with the sickness. For myself passion all the way, I bought my first Rolex in 1989 due to the way it felt (outstanding when wearing it), the beautiful dial (steel tapestry), the awesome way the DJ looked, and for the fact I was buying pure quality.
I buy Rolex today for the same reason. I don't like it when celebs. Pimp Rolex I feel Rolex is a watch bought most by every day people like us. I would not trade anyone on this forum for a forum of pure celebs. Can't find celebs. like JJ, Bo, Jocke, Arturo, Al, Steve, Lisa, and the list goes on and on. TRF is pure class; I am pleased to b involved with all of you. |

I first saw the sub in Goldfinger, just thought it was great looking. and I always sort of liked the dive watch look. I also got into the idea of having something forever, since I had gotten into the habit of getting attached to cheaper watches and having them die.
I am also a fan of classic designs in general, and I think the Sub one of the most beautiful watch designs ever. As far as celebs, it does not influence me as such, because celebs wear lots of stuff I don't like, but I just saw National Treasure 2, and Nick Cage's sub is very noticeable, and it is really fun to see the Sub in action.......same thing for Bond and magnum (GMT)...but in order for that to be attractive, the object has to have appeal on it's own. Just because Roger Moore wore a digital Seiko did not make me want one......... |

It is not all marketing....meaning just form and no content...The marketing in the case of Rolex actually reflects some pretty good values of a company that distributes its money to winners in the sense that good, charitable, scientific, and humanitarian companies and concerns are beneficiaries of the profits. When you see the likes of a Roger Federer wearing his Rollie after a match, such is the best of brand marketing through the testimonial of someone who actually achieves excellence.
I would agree that few marketing campaigns are like Rolex in terms of long term results, but I would also say that the campaign is consistent with the values of the company, and with the quality of the product, hence giving the product the scarcity and excellence value that makes us all want and respect the watch.
