should i take the risk? its killing me.

Of course the seller says that.

Your father has been working with Rolex for 30+ years and you do not want his opinion?

No box or papers? Why would you want to take the risk?

Just give me your money & I'll pick it up for you.

I use to work in the area. Thank god there was a NYSC in the area cause I always felt that I needed a shower from all the slime. There are tons of after-market watch supply stores in the area, that should give you an idea of how many 100% all original Rolex watches there really are.
Another hint: When they pay guys minimum wage to wear a sign saying "we by gold, we buy watches" , whos business are they trying to solicit? Then sell the watch w/o papers. Dont forget, you can never get clean title on stolen goods.

How many times did he refer you as "my friend"?

Listen to your dad, father knows best.

Let's review:
You know absolutely nothing about the credibility of the seller. (Violating rule #1, know your seller).

Your father knows all about 47th St. and worked there 10 years, but he doesn't like it. Did you ever ask why?

Your father knows all about 47th St. and about Rolexes, and you didn't bring him to check things out. Your thinking on this was what, exactly?

I can't figure out what's driving you to consider this purchase.

My friend is a jewelry manufactures rep and said like everywhere there are good as well as bad dealers on the street so it would depend on to whom you are referring?

I know the owner of one of the stores there and he is a reputable so I uses it just depends but as always, buyer beware.

I wouldn't do it. I live in New York and have been on 47th Street a lot through the years. Sure, there are a couple of decent watch dealers there, but there are also a lot of shady dealers. Why risk it? You can get a GMT elsewhere. Can you post some photos of the watch you're considering?

And what does a box and the so called papers mean that the watch is authentic afraid not today. These so called papers which in the real world is just a warranty paper/card much like you get with most products today.Fact with today's technology these items are the easiest to fake.So never ever rely on just a box or the so called papers to authenticate any watch unless bought from a reliable sources like say a AD.

I am a few blocks away and would not go there for any of my watch needs. My cousin likes to get his watch polished from a guy there but I would not trust them as far as I could throw them.

It's really something how much the young ladies working in those stores flirt when I was looking in the windows at the watches. Degrading in a way. They do about anything to get you in the store.

flirting wouldn't do anything for me, but a little extra service after I buy a watch could go a long way

Whats the name of the shop?

If you have a bad feeling about it, what is it exactly? Ask them for a written return policy that allows for a full refund if it doesn't check out 100% Rolex and bring it to the RSC up the street on 5th

I buy diamonds there. Not that that has anything to do with Rolex purchases. I thought I always got good value both in quality, selection and design for the pieces I bought for my wife. I go into the stores that are the least theatrical about getting you to come in. Do you guys not recommend diamond purchased there either?

The general consensus here, mostly from people that have only walked the area but have never done business there, is that it not a good place. People erroneously confuse it with the "diamond districts" of other cities where they're really made up of a few stores that charge retail prices or that it's a gimmicky type of place. They don't understand that vast majority (90%+) of diamonds in the country go through the diamond district. In fact, GIA, EGL, and AGI are all headquartered on 47th street!

I have no problem buying diamonds or BNIB grey market watches, as I have done both. Nobody in the country (including the internet) could come close on the prices on the diamonds or watches I've purchased there.

I would however, be a little skeptical buying vintage unless I could have it checked out by Rolex.

Its true that, that block makes me sick sometimes. its pretty slimey, but I will say I have flipped a watch from that block and made 4k in one day. true story. there are deals to be had because $ and watches are changing hands so quickly... its like vegas tho, play wisely and know the game
