I'm in the Market for a new (well, second hand but new to me) 4x4 but have reached an interesting dilemma...

Two more diverse cars you couldn't wish to find but at the moment it has come down to a Land Rover Defender 90" X-Tech or a Porsche Cayenne S!?!

They are in the same ball-park on cost (the land rover is slightly more) and milage (again the land rover has the higher miles).

I need it primarily as a towing vehicle to haul a 3.5 tonne horse box but it will also double up as my car since, while I have access to other vehicles, I tend to get territorial about cars, put all my "man stuff" in them, litter them with junk and do everything short of scent-mark the drivers seat!

I know it's a weird choice but I'd welcome your thoughts...

Which costs more to keep?
Service costs for a Porsche here in California are high.
I think a Land Rover is more appropriate for your location.

Had a Land Rover terrible, I would get a diesel again in a heart beat.

Things like tyres for the porsche would likely be 4 or 5 times more than the Landy and it would probably drink even more than I do!

You're right about the Landy suiting where I live. On the other hand, though, because I'm so remote I have to do big milages to get anywhere... The porker would certainly be more comfortable, especially since I'm 6'3".

It's will be nice to haul stuff around the farm, and very stylish in town too.

It really is a jack of all trades. Porsche has excellent quality too.

Oh man, two pretty awesome vehicles to be choosing from. For pure 4x4 I'd go with the Defender. Around here, those are pretty rare, whereas the Porsche is everywhere.

If you want some sportiness and luxury I'd go with the Porsche. Tough decision, though. For what you'd be using it for I'd lean towards the Defender?

My two absolute favorite vehicles!

The porsche will handle the road and climate control better
Vs
the defender will handle the open air and lack of road better.......

They are both a blast to ride in their own ways.....

I have been back and forth 3 times, while writing this:-)

My first instinct was toward the Defender.

The Land Rover is definitely more "authentic", for whatever that's worth.

But, points for German engineering.

I was surprised myself, there's precious few vehicles that can haul that weight and I was shocked to find a Porsche among their number.

It will probably be the Landy but WHY does the driving position have to be so bloody awful if you are over 6 feet tall?!?

None of the SUVs discussed are adequate for pulling a 3.5 ton trailer. And that is ignoring their inordinately high maintenance costs.

You would be MUCH better served with a Suburban, and probably a 2500.

Agreed! Land rover won't be any cheaper really to fix or maintain either, no brainer for me

Well I have to say go for a Landrover.
But go for the Discovery.
I bought a Discovery 3 last year (due to needing something to transport my oaf around) and was that impressed with it I went out and bought the Discovery 4 a few months later.

Landrover sent us on an off road day and what that thing can do is unbelievable.

I can tow things and not even know there behind me. The inside of the new Discoverys is similar to being in a Range Rover.
Combine this with being a genuine 7 seat vehicle and the amount of space inside the thing ill never go back.

Think back to all the snow and floods we had this year. Well with the Discovery it was like being out in an everyday car. Nothing stopped it and I mean nothing.
Over 1m of water! No problem straight through.
Going down steep snow and ice areas! No problem. Put it into hill decent and away it went.

If it is to be used mainly for work I would choose the Defender, no doubt, it is easier and cheaper to maintain and service, it also would not need to go to a specialist dealer for servicing. We were always taught that a L/R when in low ratio would go any where, I have not seen anything in my experience to make me doubt that. If you dent a Landrover it just looks like everyone else's and adds character (Patina perhaps) Dent a Porsche and it costs lots of money and you will still have that gut wrenching feeling when you go to sleep and wake up for days to come. Parts for a L/R are dead easy and cheap to obtain. I would imagine that insurance for a Porsche would be ferociously expensive but don't know for sure.

Porsche is beautiful but the running costs (dont know how many miles to the gallon) servicing and repair are all a lot more than a L/R, also needs to be a specialist dealer to boot, for driving on metal roads only I would go for it, but sliding down muddy fields through gate posts with horses hooves flailing around, as well as mud on the beautiful carpets of the Porsche would be a nightmare and not worth the hassle IMHO.

I remember you had a Jeep Grand Cherokee after your Nissan, do you still have it? Maybe use that as your car and get a real truck as described for the work otherwise just use the truck all around.

You're right, I'll end up caning the poor thing to death! Both the Landy and the Porsche I was looking at have gone... I'm off to look at a Mitsubishi L200 but it's not really rated to tow the weight I need (but neither was the Nissan...)

What I want is a big American pickup but a)they don't sell them in the uk and I'd have to get an import and b) they don't fit on our roads!

I recently read the Land Rover had the worst reliability of any vehicle, the same reputation it's always had. Never owned one so don't have any firsthand knowledge.

I would be very concerned towing nearly 8000lbs with a Porsche.

You can find Full size Fords all over the UK.

I got rid of my F150 and stepped up to a F250 when I had to pull a 9000lb trailer.

Your roads are tight, but an F250 will pull that trailer (and the invaluable commodity that will reside in it) effortlessly for years. Look for a preowned full sized diesel pick up with FWD and you will never regret it.
