Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have the feeling that second hand Rolex prices have gone down. This is true for vintage and recent models.
For example, at the previous Antiqurum auctions this year, a DRSD sold for $15k (not including taxes). These models were selling in 2008 for $30k. Comex watches have come down a lot. I bought last month at an auction a 2012 Milgauss GV (full set) for $5,25k! |

My Vintage Hunt
I sold a circa 1967 5513 2-3 weeks ago thanks to this forum
I have been hunting on all forums and with our trusted vintage sellers for an exceptional replacement matte 5513 - with super sharp, period correct chamfers and fat crown guards. Can't find the case I want anywhere Clay waited 3 years to find his preferred and prized SD - I need to practice patience... |

Years ago you could go on to a forum or ebay and with seemingly very little trouble, find what you were looking for...
I think there are a number of factors today that have changed that.. 1) I think the hobby has grown and more people are out there searching for nice examples... 2) We have all become much more educated as to what to look for... 3) I think the majority of "collectors" and "enthusiasts" have become much more picky... I know I have...what I would have been happy with several years ago just won't cut it now for me...Hence my three year search... In the end, I think it's important not to loose sight of the fact that for most of us, it's just a hobby and should be fun.. If you aren't enjoying the "journey", then what's the point??? |

Sadly, the whole character of the hunt changed back in the 90s, when some db of an investment counselor noticed that vintage watches hold their values and recommended them as a part of a balanced portfolio. Things do change over time and we have economic trends to thank for that: without Japanese world dominance of the financial markets, which happened briefly in the 1980s, MOST bubble-backs don't sell for over 10k anymore. Vintage is all a matter of finding a buyer, so I don't blame sellers for wanting to flip the hottest models. I love 1018s. I can find one in fifteen minutes, for three times as much as any sane person would pay. And yes, the prices for sport Rolex have been slipping a bit these past seven weeks. Wanna know why? Look at the stock-market. As long as there is no place to put your money to work, it's ok to buy "toys" and please yourself, so demand goes up and prices rise. When the market comes back, as it is doing, there are better things to do AT THE MOMENT with 10k than look for another example for your collection. There'll be time to collect when the market suffers a setback, as it always does.
The most important thing I could ever say to a fellow collector or enthusiast would be: there is nothing more wonderful that having something left to want, to hunt for, to dream about. |

EBay is fine ONLY if you deal with trusted sellers. TRF is very reliable I agree a few rare models can reach high prices, but in general, based on recent hammer prices, I'm surprised to see much lower levels. |

Most of the middle to lower end vintage pieces have taken a bit of hit in the past few years. High end/pristine pieces remain strong. Not sure I agree with buying at auctions..... you are competing against the world market so prices tend to be high.
