Diamonds vs. Rolex for a Significant Other

Do men appreciate a Rolex more than women do? I think the short answer is yes; mostly I think because it really is the only conservative piece of jewelery that a man can wear that can be expressive (doesn't hurt either that it's mechanized). I love my Explorer II and I was thinking of buying my long term girlfriend a women's rolex. However, at the last minute, I went for the diamond stud earings instead. On this forum, I have not seen a lot of posts from women (granted I have only been a member since Dec so I may be wrong) going ga-ga over their watches and I think that's why I called an audible. What's the deal? Does rolex not market to women as much? Is the brand considered more masculine that others? Do women not care as much about watches? Or am I just way off on this one?

ROLEX is mostly a guy thing, like trucks and bulldozers ...
occassionally you see women in there but not too many....

Why don't you just ask her? I'd buy my gf diamonds, a necklace, or bracelet, over a watch any day.

I would buy the gf a diamond necklace, diamond ring, or diamond earrings. Men appreciate a Rolex more than a woman would because for the professional male, the watch is unquestionably the only piece of jewelry that a man could pull off conservatively. I mean sure you have a younger generation of metro sexual d00ds who wear earrings now, but they are a minority and I for one am not one of them. No Offense, if you can pull off wearing earrings and your a d00d, then more power to you. Usually the first thing a woman notices on a man is usually his watch because men do not have that many options for jewelry.

buy her a nice 1 carat diamond and then let her decide how she wants it set. i guarantee that is a better gift for a woman than any brand of watch.

in regards to women and rolexes i met a very hot lady yesterday (working in a watch shop) who was wearing a men's daytona and it suited her big time.

Somebody once told me that watches aren't the thing to give to women and should only be given as a parting gift. It beats why you'd want to buy a nice watch for someone that you're splitting up with though. I once bought a lovely Rolex for a beautiful girl and I got nowhere with her. Ha ha. Silly me. Lesson learned you can't buy love and just buy another Rolex for yourself. Only joking. Ha ha.

I offered my girlfriend his and her DJ's or even YM's, assuming I was getting rid of my watch. I've since decided that the my girlfriend is more so a dangly, shiny, artsy type of jewelry wearer. To her, a Rolex isn't the style of watch she would wear, but a 18k white gold Gucci bracelet w/ watch is.

I don't know. Maybe one day she'll grow up and want one, but in her mid 20's, now is not the right time.

Have the same dilemma.

I think if you are considering a watch for a lady, do not look at it like the utility piece that men typically do. I love my GMT for the utility, function, and subtle style it conveys. For a woman, you should look at it as jewelry, not a watch. My wife did not like the old clasp on the Lady DJ Jubilee at all, too "watchy". Now the newer hidden clasp on a 31mm DJ-Jubilee with a WG fluted bezel, fit loose, really interested her. Go figure. Most likely my next Rolex will be hers.

My $2.00 worth...

Stay away from watches. You give a watch to a man and most of them will thank you. Even the stingy ones who would not buy a Rolex! You give an expensive watch to a woman and in most cases:

- The color is wrong.
- The shape is odd.
- It makes her look fat.
- Too big for the wrist.
- Does not have a bag that matches the style/color of the watch.
- "Cool! But what do you mean when you say that it does not have batteries?"
- "Idiot! We need to get new grass for the lawn and a new minivan and you're getting these watches!"

I offered my long term gf a nice watch for a present. She did not have one to begin with and she's always late. I figured that would be a nice present :) She did not like any time pieces I showed to her. Finally she settled down for something for $50 and she's going to get some jewelry :)

I am deeply sorry if I offended anybody by my post, but I thought I'd share my story.

Interesting thought.
My wife has a Lady TT DJ that she will only wear at the weekend as it is her good watch. She wears a DKNY watch to her work and also has a ladies Gucci watch.
She has no interest at all in any of these watches other than they look good and suit her.
Nothing wrong in that.

Welcome to TRF!

I don't think Rolex is a specific "man's thing". And fortunately, we have some very nice female members here proving it.

I made that mistake once about 12 years ago. I bought my wife a ladies TT Tudor that looked similar to this:

and she hated it. She thought it looked like a "nurses watch" whatever that means. Not a proud moment for her.
I returned it.
Funny but I seldom remember what gifts I've bought over the years but I'll never forget that.

being a female, my priority is money. Diamond is next, then Rolex.
to me, however, luxury things are secondary.
Hence, they aren't meant "must have" if my pocket is not full enough to fill them in.

Get one anyway, tnt. YOU know what YOU like.

Here's my piece of advice: Rather than try to surprise your wife/girlfriend with a Rolex, as what she thinks. Take her to try some on and explore the different styles. As her if she'd prefer a diamond over a watch. Give her time to think it over - this is new territory for her. Done carefully, I think you would both be very happy and content with your purchase or either a watch or a diamond.

I'm one of those women who doesn't see a watch as a piece of jewelry - two distinctly different things. I guess that's why, if I had the desire to own more diamonds, I wouldn't get them on my watch. Jewelry doesn't DO anything but look shiny. Maybe I'm the only woman who thinks this way!?

She appreciates it, but...

I bought a DateJust for myself and tried to buy my wife one at the same time but she just didn't like them, "too clunky" she said.
A few weeks after I had mine she said how she liked it and had reconsidered and now wanted one. I said "if you're getting one now I'm getting a Submariner for myself." I got her the ladies tt DateJust with MOP dial and gold Romans and my self the Sub
(don't you love it when a plan come together). She likes the watch, which is several years old by now, but to this day she can not wind it, set it, change the date herself, she never had any interest in seeing how to do it. When it needs setting, date changed, or wound from lack of wearing she just hands it to me.
While she appreciates it and knows what it is, to her "it's just a watch"

I think it's true to say most women don't care much about watches. That IS why women are outnumbered 500 to 1 here! I think it's kind of fun to be one of the few. The proud. The Rolex Women.

It all depends what she has. From a young age, girls dream of having diamond studs. Then it is a pearl necklace or a tennis bracelet, then it is, etc....My wife had all of those before she discovered Rolex. Her first it was a TT DJ. Now it is WG w/diamonds and a MOP face. Check her jewelry box and make a list. Bring it to the jeweler and see if she has the essentials before she gets a watch (unless she has stated she wants one). Also, did she get her current watch as a college grad. present from her dead grand-parents or is it just an everyday beater...

Took my GF to Ben Bridge and ask her which Rolex she likes. She said, oh I really like this RING! Fact: Rolex is a man's wear but was introduced by woman swimming the English Channel!

I agree that you shouldn't assume. I've been a WIS since I was a little girl. I'm also fortunate to have some beautiful jewelry, but I'm still a bit conservative. I prefer subtle bling to BLING BLING if that makes any sense.

Only in the last couple of years have I converted my husband to more of a WIS. So I'm definitely proof of a woman who has always gone for watches over other jewelry! You CAN have both

My wife has made if clear to me which Rolex she wants. A woman's DJ WITH diamonds placed on the dial for hour indices...

Best of both worlds, I suppose!
