Watch as a compass?

How about this..you have a compass built into your Rolex, (sort of). Say it is 8:00. Point the 8 towards the sun. Now look for the 12:00 marker (triangle on my Sub). Point the hour hand at the sun. Split the difference, so, half way between 8 and 12 is 10 (10:00). That is south and would make 4 north. If you need to go east or west from there, adjust your direction accordingly, 90 degrees or 15 minutes.

What is best a custom Rolex or a Rolex that is stuck in custom?

Buy a professional camera and you´re a professional
photographer, buy a flute and you own a flute.

GMT as a compass

My Rolex brochure that came with the GMT explains this.

Don't forget to make hemisphere specific adjustments. Ie. in the Southern Hemisphere, you'd reverse the reading, and also, the technique does not apply to places close to the Equator as there, the sun is pretty much overhead meaning less angle to play with.

Instead of having to write the whole thing again, here is something I found about the compass function:

Well, since I have an MA in German, I will translate the whole darned thing for you

Here goes:

Headline: "WATCH WITH COMPASS FUNCTION"

Text:

"Every watch can be used as a compass, but only when the sun shines. On the GMT and Explorer II the 24-hour hand works as a compass needle, but it also works with every other type of watch! Astonishing!
Now a tutorial and a thank you to the watch collector Georg Burger who provided it. It is very easy to do with the:

Rolex GMT Master or Explorer II:

1) Set the "normal" hour hand to point towards the sun
2) The 24-hour hand then is the "compass needle" and points EXACTLY to the North (if you are on the Northern hemisphere, that is, or else the 24-hour hand points to the South)

IMPORTANT: The hour hand and the 24-hour hand MUST point to the same time!

Normal watch with second time zone:

But it also works with a "normal" watch, albeit you - unlike with the GMT and Explorer II - have to do a little more thinking:

1) Set the hour hand to point towards the sun.
2) In your mind, create a "line" that goes from 12 o' clock, diving the watch dial in two halfs.
3) The half angle between the "line you created in your mind" and the hour hand points to the South.

Important: During DST (Daylight Saving Time) the "theoretical line" must go from the 1 o' clock position diving the dial in two halfs instead of dividing it from the 12 o' clock position".

----------------------

The pic:

"Arrow pointing towards the sun says:

"Let the hour hand point towards the sun"

Arrow pointing towards the North says:

"24 hour hand points towards the North"

Under the pic it says:

"Compass function with the GMT and Explorer II (source: Georg Burger)."

You can use this technique with any watch :) If you're into survival techniques this is a great one to know along with being able to navigate by using the North Star.
