New Volkswagen Golf GTD mk7

Has anyone read details of the above car?

Just noticed its open for orders....

185hp from its 2.0TDI engine, 380nm torque..... Yet 67mpg combined and only £20 annual road tax!!! Also standard fit now are front and rear sensors, colour screen DAB, bi-xenon lights, Bluetooth, 18" alloys, adaptive cruise etc (all normally options on German cars)

Looks like a cracking car to me and could be tempted to order one for Mrs Nairn1980!!

That's 136kw and 380Nm.It will fly !!! AND on fumes too !! I think practically looking at 13-14km/liter From 2.0l the powerband will be narrow, but in the powerband it will have enormous power.

Great little car but that road tax offer is just for one year after you pay normal price.

I have a 2.0 DCI Laguna and I don't pay £20 road tax. I think its £170. Is it cheaper in Scotland?

It is based on emissions, not engine size.

I have a 109g/km VW diesel and it was very nice paying £20 to renew my road tax this year, instead of the usual £175 or so.

Haha I wish it was cheaper in Scotland!!
Volkswagen never used to be but now it's pretty cutting edge in terms of emissions etc....even the ne mk7 GTI with 220bhp is only £120 road tax and that's a petrol!

Top marks VW!

How did they managed to squeeze out +-25kw and 20Nm more than the next best Japanese 2L Turbo diesel engine!?

I don't like its design though, looks very much like a plain Jane Toyota Corolla hatchback.

They simply hasn't caught on because Exxon & Co doesn't want us to drive cars that get 700 miles to a tank of gas instead of 175. They price the product higher in retail, limit distribution locations. Big oil doesn't want us to drive diesel.

The second reason is California's regulations on emision, e.g. Toyota cannot bring over their diesel Land Cruisers and the likes because they don't pass CA regulations.

True Patrick, Diesel still is quite dirty compared to gas, but what about outside Cali?? and the rest of North America? I do think the Big oil companies due have a hand in it though, your right there !

I go to friends in Florida every year. They always drive big engined petrol SUVs. However on the roads I am starting to spot diesels from BMW and Mercedes eg 330D and E350 cdi. Granted I see much more petrels than diesels but I thought it was slowly changing.

Here in the UK engine sizes are going down and turbos are being fitted. 1.2, 1.4 is a common petrol engine size for new medium cars now. As a result co2 and mpg are improving greatly (remember we pay road tax annually based on how clean the engine is)

Eg a big SUV will pay 200-400 a year where a cleaner car will pay from 0 a year. Add in the mpg difference at in dollars close to $10 a gallon and it starts to make sense why British cars are getting smaller and more efficient,

I have a Toyota Land Cruiser with a gas-guzzling V8 at 275 hp in it. It is so stupid. I really want a diesel in that thing, but as described above, Toyota has explained to me that they have no intention of bringing one in.

Wow virtually ALL SUV sales in the UK and much of Europe are diesel. A petrol model would have horrendous resale here in the UK

I know, it is infuriating. Because it is not like I need speed in my 7000 lbs Land Cruiser, I just want torque.

I work for an energy company. We're not "big oil" (whatever that means). We own a refinery and over 100 retail outlets. We make Diesel and sell it all. Exxon et al does not set fuel prices. Exxon et al are not in a conspiracy to preclude higher mileage vehicles. Any allegation to the contrary is pure imagination and speculation.

Regarding the People's Republik of Kalifornia, blech.

funny seeing how americans are after diesel engines. here it is completely the opposite. all of my friends want simple, no turbocharged petrol engines. no v8s, no power monsters, just plain, reliable, easy and cheap to maintain engines.....

if you use it for around 15k miles per year a diesel is just not a very good option.
higher price, higher maintenance costs, much more things to break down. same applies to funny sized turbo charged petrol engines. they are just not ideal for city use.

here the conspiracy theorists are saying that the automotive industry wants us all to buy diesels even if we don't need them.

my wife drives a simple petrol engined volvo and if you take a look at the used car sites, they are nearly extinct though all i can see around me are perople looking for them.
