I did inquire about an AP ... some hot shot told me they are not as hot as the hype and come selling time, I will pay the price ... so I backed off..

I still think for the same money I'd rather have the AP product than the Rolex dollar equivalent. I also deny that I'm going to flip all that I buy. It just turns out that way. But I'm in it for the watch, not the return on investment. |

When you say "started" do you mean bought or revived as a gift?

Nope, stuck with Rolex.
This was my first automatic watch, and I have noticed that in higher-up brands (e.g. PP), there are very few automatic watches for women, or maybe they make a model or two but the rest are in quartz. I suppose that a thinner watch is more in style for women. I recently saw a Cartier women's watch in a jewelry shop. When I picked it up I noticed that the stainless steel band was far, far less substantial than my Yachtmaster's brand. At this point, after a dozen years of owning a Rolex, I pretty much expect my watch to be sturdy enough to take whatever activity I am doing. I am also totally addicted to my watch's bezel (also my first watch with a bezel). I use it to time everything, from cooking to parking meters, several times a day. If I were to buy a more expensive watch, my guess is that it would not be as sturdy and versatile as my Rolex, and would be just a "special occasion watch" that would not get as much wrist time. So, for now, I'm not willing to spend more than $10,000 on a watch that I would wear only occasionally. |

Started with a Caravel as a kid. Then much later an Eddie Bauer Hamilton Khaki quartz. When it died, I was casually looking for a replacement, proud that watches were not among my hobbies (photography, music/audio, fountain pens, folding knives). Then I noticed symptoms of becoming interested. Early symptoms were addressed through lower end Seiko purchases, including an SKX007 and Orange Monster. Then I got a wonderful Tsunami from Jake Bourdeau of Dagaz/10 Watches (recommended). Then I began to see specialists and costs skyrocketed. First a couple of military watches (Damasko and Stowa), then a more expensive IWC Mark XVI, then ... Rolex ... first a 16610 and then a 16600, both from Patrick Aziz (ocrolexguy). At this point, watches threaten to consume not only my body but my mind and home. I'm calling out to you. Help me stop the madness ;-)

Not in the position yet but I got my first Rolex last November, joined this forum happy to share my new watch.
Now I have been introduced to the likes of the Hulk, WG blue Sub, DD platinum. I will definitely be adding to my GMT when I never thought I would. I've got the bug and I like it....

Rolex was my first "luxury" watch and I now have three.
I respect the other names in horology, but it is my considered opinion that none have a better history and tradition than Rolex--longer, perhaps, but not better. Rolex stands for a lot more than just watches and that's something I can appreciate. As for future watches, I can only guess.

I started with Seiko when I was 17 then moved up to Tag & now I have 2 Rolexes. Will there be anymore in the future. Who knows but I'm really liking the 39mm Explorer.

My first decent watch was Sector back when it was a Euro equivalent of a Tag Heuer. Then I ventured to Omega and down to Seiko then up to Chopard. After finding out that Chopard was too snooty for me, I downsized to Seiko and Rolex.
It's really hard for me to get into one of those high end brands such as Piaget, Chopard, VC, etc. due to the "lack" of support from their collectors and servicing network. I'm not to keen on sending a watch in for repairs into a black hole address in the middle of nowhere. |

Started at misc random watches, then Tag, then inherited a Cartier, then moved on to Rolex, then Ball, then to Tudor, then bought my first gshock, then seiko (a vintage). Next on the list is a AP or PAM. Not sure yet.

I started with Tag, Sinn, Omega and now I have added a couple of Rolex watches to the fold. I don't really think of it as a horological progression; I enjoy each piece for what it is; each piece stands on its own merits, as it where.

I would think few people start with a Patek Philippe.

My obsession began many, many years ago with a simple quartz Seiko. Then progressed to a Movado. Next to a Rolex Sub. Then on to an AP Royal Oak. Followed by a JLC Memovox. Then I was "drafted into the major league" and now have a Patek Calatrava and an Aquanaut....as well as a Lange 1.
Not sure where I'm headed from here, but it sure scares the hell out of me! |
