I Need All Info on Explorer 214270
Hi everyone,
I need all the information on the above watch. Attached are my current watches. I got my first Rolex two years ago and the second one just last year. I have been very happy with them and I am now saving up for another watch and this one is going to be for my husband. I have purchased two IWCs for my husband and it's about time he gets a bracelet watch. I have not found a mens Rolex that I like but again, I have not been to any AD since I got my second Rolex. Anyway, I was on a business trip earlier this week, I walked into a Rolex AD, saw the Explorer 214270 for the first time and I fell in love. I love the simple dial and the white markers. The oyster bracelet is nice too. Here is my dilemma, I have to admit, I do not know too much about watch movements and so on. The sales person informed me that the Explorer is duel time zone. I found it odd, is that true? Please give me all the information on this watch. If you currently own this, can you please post pictures and let me know how you like this watch? Is the black dial hard to read? What other Rolex would you recommend around this price point? Thanks in advance. |

The sales person must have got something mixed up - the 214270 only shows one time zone at a time. The Explorer II 216570 does have dual time capability, it is the one that comes in either black or white.
I my opinion, the 214270 is the nicest sports model Rolex makes at this time. |

Thanks Stevi - that's what I thought too. I was not interested in the Explorer II and I didn't even ask her to show me that. I had the Explorer I in my hand and I specifically asked her what special feature(s) this watch has. She asked if my husband travels a lot? I said he does go on business trips and we do travel a lot for leasure. She then said "This is the perfect watch for that as it has duel time zone." I just kept quiet and I could not wait till I get back and ask the experts here to confirm.

The dual time zone is on the ExpII 216570, which in my opinion is the best stainless steel Rolex by far.

I like it and I'm saving for it. I think it's one of the best understated watches. It doesn't have a date though. Go for it. Your husband will be happy. What iwc's does he have? Would he be ok with the 39mm size?

Here is a picture of the two IWCs that I got for my husband. They are around 41mm so the 39mm would fit him nicely. I agree with you, this Explorer is very understated that's why I love it. He would be ok without the date. Do you think I should get him a different dial? Too bad this watch only comes in black as he already has a black dial on his IWC Portofino. I was considering getting him the matching OP like mine with blue dial but the Explorer is a lot nicer.

The 214270 was my first Rolex and IMHO the perfect watch. Dressy enough for suits and sporty enough for everything else. And rare enough that not everyone else has one. In fact I'm not sure that I've seen another in the wild as we say.

Thanks for sharing a pic of yours Rod. I agree, I have not seen this watch on anyone that's why when I first saw it at the AD, I was surprised by it.

Less is more. Simple is best. Whatever.
The Explorer is IMHO the ultimate and most versatile watch made. If I was to own only one watch (god forbid) I would go for the 114270. It goes with everyting from blue-jeans to black-tie. The movement (cal.3130) is self winding and thrustworthy. It has no date, though. The beautiful black dial is easily read. The white gold arabic numbers might "black-out" during special lighting conditions, but the indexes and the hands are always visible and easy to read. The lume is very good and lasts all night long. The bracelet is improved from the previous model (14270, 36mm) and so is the lock, which now has micro adjustment and can easily be adjusted about 5mm without tools - perfect for that hot day in the sun when the wrist tends to swell a little. The watch goes "under the radar" and most people will not recognize this as a Rolex, which I find ok. |

LOL. I happen to like watches more than my husband. As for looking for a wife who likes watches, I think a good place to start is by placing a wanted ad on this forum.

Yes, I have had a few discussions with my husband on Rolex. He does not like the sub. He likes the Daytona but his is not crazy about it. I know he loves the IWC Perpetual Calendar after I showed it to him two years ago at our AD, so I will most likely get him that or a Lange when he turns 50 but that is a light years away. In the interim, I can't see myself spending more than $10K on a watch like Daytona but the Explorer is something that's doable. |

The explorer is the perfect watch IMO. The simplicity of the dial makes it perfect to wear with jeans or a suit. It will be my next Rolex.

The Explorer 1 is a great watch. Simple and very clean looking. Its very "under the radar" but so is IWC to regular non-WIS, I just don't know if you're looking into Rolex for contrast. I think it will go great with his IWCs because both have fairly busy dials compared to the explorer.
