Help! Advice Needed Buying First Rolex!

I was hoping to get some insights into my purchase of a first Rolex.

I'm looking at used Date 15200 model (34mm). I've done a bit of research and found 2 reputable online dealers that deal almost exclusively with Rolex and provide 1 year warranty.

My budget is around $2,500 and I've found 2 that interest me:

1. circa 1982 model in mint condition with oyster bracelet, engine turned bezel and roman numeral dial (~$2,500)

2. circa 1996 model in mint condition with oyster bracelet, smooth steel bezel, saphire crystal (~$2,500)

Both have 1 year warranty, but different dealers. Both have 100% feedback on eBay with significant number of feedback figures.

My question: I would logically think the 1996 model would be more money, but given my lack of knowledge, I'm wondering if there's a reason the 1982 model would be the same price as the 1996 model? Did the engineering suffer in the later watches? Some other reason?

Much thanks for any guidance I can get.

Regards...Wallnut

The price of used watches is based on supply and demand, not how old or new one might be...

When you go back 20 years or more, they plateau and examples in the same condition are priced alike vs. those in poor condition...

Since prices are similar, you choose the one with the features you want and in the condition you are comfortable with.. look around for the price you like, negotiate, then make your purchase.. It will still last your lifetime..

Excellent advice above wallnut. Just remember to buy the seller before the watch. Also keep in mind that either of the ones you are looking at will very likley be in need of a service, don't forget to factor that into your budget.

Thanks for the advice, all. One last question: Are there any major differences in the manufacturing process from 1982 to 1996 that would warrant buying one over the other?

Also looking at Bob'swatches.com -- any experience with them? Lots of good press and seem to be very transparent.

I purchased a watch via Bobs and have zero complaints. If my go to guy cannot acquire I have no issue going with Bobs again.

No differences in mfg process should impact your decision.

Check out the who's who section for discussion re sellers.

Sounds like you know you want a 34mm watch. I find them to be too small...but if that's what you really want.

My suggestion would be to take a look at the classifieds on TRF and, if you have a specific model or budget, reach out to one of TRF's trusted sellers and see what they can do for you. Remember, you're buying the seller as much as you're buying the watch.

Just something for you to think about before buying:
Have you gone to a Rolex AD and tried on a "Date"....make sure you like the way it looks on you before buying. B/c it's 34mm, pretty small for today's standards and it was small even 10-15 years ago.
The DateJust is 36mm a little more standard for a mans size watch these days.
Also, what size is your wrist size? If it's over 7 inches 34 will definitely look small.
I know your budge is 2500, but you will be wasting $$ if you don't like it and have to try a sell to get what you really want?
Don't settle if you can wait and save a little more. It will cost you more $ in the long run

I am not trying to sway you, but try one on first

Thanks for all the great advice. I ended up going with Date 15200 (circa 1991). I realize the trend is towards bigger watchs, but I have a small wrist. The watch arrived yesterday and it looks awesome. The size is right for me. Glad to join the club!
