Rash from wifes wedding band

My wife keeps getting this dry skin/rash on her finger that's caused by her wedding band. Its a eternity band in platinum and I'm guessing that the underside area is rubbing her skin the wrong way.

The weird thing is that it just started happening a month or so ago and she's been wearing it for a year. Has anyone else run into the same issue?

She's tried cleaning it real well many times with no luck. If she stops wearing it for a couple days her finger heals up but as soon as she puts it back on it causes the rash again within days.

Dustin, Please don't jump to any conclusions but I have heard that in some cases pregnancy can cause chemical changes that may have unusual results.

Sounds like she may have a reaction to Platinum and the reason she is having a reaction now, a year later is it may have been coated with a substance(to protect the fingers) which is wearing off.....

Check with the Jewelry Store where you bought it to see what can be done.....
Good luck and I'm sure something will work out...I know I have a reaction to copper so to wear a copper bracelet I will coat it with clear nail polish and this stops it from causing a reaction which turns my wrist green!!!

The ring is Cartier. I wonder if they used some sort of Rhodium plating? Ill have to check with them.

I have a wide platinum wedding ring as well that I used to wear 24/7. I have to wash my hands literally a hundred times a day at work. Occasionally I would develop a little local dermatitis that would go away when I took the ring off for a couple days. Have her try taking it off at night to let her finger air out, maybe give it a whole day off a week. It works for me.
Good luck.

All that you can do is to remove the ring...

Either she is allergic to the metal-type of the ring or is a simple fungus (yeah, it sounds worse than it is...) that develops because of the oiliness of the skin combined with the hot/humid weather. If she sees a dermatologist there are various creams that she can apply.

If you get a rash from the wedding band, you hired the wrong band.

Are you sure that the ring is platinum and not whitegold? What hallmarks are inside? 750/- 950/-?

Whitegold is hallmarked with 750/ the nickel content causes often heavy reactions when the rhodiumplating has been worn off
Platinum is hallmarked with 950/ , causes seldom reactions and usually is not coated or plated with anything.

If it's PT, take it to The jeweller and have ot cleaned ( the settings of the eternity ring are hollow on the rearside?)

Then let her wear the ring.

If the irritation gets back, ask the jeweller to get it rhodium - plated which should eliminate the problem for some time.

Yes, its platinum. Marked 950 and hollow on the underside. I will be checking with Cartier.

Did she change the cleaning fluid recently? Maybe it's that and not the ring.

I used to get a rash from my sea dweller. I had always thought I was crazy or needed a reason to flip it which I did....

Cartier does dip their platinum jewelry in rhodium. I bring my band to the boutique to have it redipped every 6 months or so. On my ring, the inside of the band is the only part that looks new

Could be some allergy to handsoap, especially if she doesn't remove her ring while washing her hands - probably leaving some soap residue under her ring and irritating her finger. My wife experienced this and now removes her rings while washing and drying her hands.

Perhaps try taking them off at night? All jewelry for both my wife and I come off at night. I've never had a problem.
