NATO vs ZULU
Hi, new to the forum, and looking to get a NATO strap for my Submariner to wear in the ocean. I was curious if anyone had suggestions on NATO vs ZULU to keep it safe.
Also, what size in mm should I be looking for for the Sub and any recommendations of wear to buy it from? Thank you! |

20mm.
I prefer a 3-ring ZULU or a RAF strap, as I don't like the extra flap on the NATO G10 or 5-ring ZULU. ZULU's tend to be a thicker nylon, so be careful when threading through, RAF/NATO's are a thinner nylon and should feed though without to much hassle. They are all just as secure in my opinion. |

I definitely prefer MARATAC NATOs. Don't really care for the ZULU straps. Too thick IMHO. I have been through hundreds of NATO straps and the MARATACs are the best IMHO.

Zulu is simple, just as safe and less rings to snag things.

My preference is the Maratec Mil strap. No rings at all.

I like both G-10 NATO and Maratac Mil straps, with the NATO feeling more secure. The rings on Zulu straps are too bulky for a Sub, IMHO. You want 20mm width for your Submariner.
I've had great luck buying straps from gnomonwatches.com, clockworksynergy.com, and broadarrow.net (Maratac bands exclusively). Happy Hunting! |

Thick rough textured Zulus work on big chunky boutique dive watches on large wrists. They would overwhelm the 40 mm case of a Rolex, not to mention putting a strain on the pins, potentially scratch the case back and sit much higher above the skin like on mini stilts. The thinner smoother NATO would be better for a small cased watch like a Rolex other than a DSSD , and James Bond would agree.
Dont even think about the 5 ring Zulus , even on ginormous divers , they are so bulky they look like a wrist splint, lol ! |
