LV price update in Japan anyway...

Was killing time ( no pun intended) yesterday waiting for a few friends of mine in town from Hawaii. Was going to take them to sushi.

The building I was in has a grey dealer called Quark. They had four 16610 Green Sub LVs. Two were used. Are you ready for this? An M serial number for $8100. A random serial number for $8900.

and two new still with stickers on it. One a M for $9000 and a V for $9100!

Was shocked!

About 7 or 8 months ago I bought a used M for $6100 and a stickered V for $6300. Less than a year the prices are crazy!

This is good news since I have 2 of them and one of them is fully stickered and totally virgin having never even been on a wrist.

The salesman said If I wanted to sell the one I just bought from him back to him he would give me top dollar. Considering that I can't bring Rolex(s) back to the States with me this may be my only option. Gutted that I may have to eliminate my collection because the majority of them I bought in Japan.

I have two myself. F serial with mark II dial (first Rolex I ever bought) and a recently acquired Y serial. Both have been in the rotation with others I have and wear. Love the classic look of this watch with the green bezel.

They can offer prices whatever they like on most products but making a sale at those prices is a different matter. Now if the LV was flying out of the doors and must have watch, ask yourself why has one dealer still got 4 on display perhaps they are well over priced or over hyped.

Probably the opposite is true:

The lower priced LVs have been selling faster than the dealer was able to manage to restock them (obvously they buy them from somewhere, too), so he rose the price to a point, where the supply meets the demand a bit better.

If you are talking about hype, Padi, how do you think about red Submariners, Double-Red Submariner and Seadwellers and Comex watches.
Are they hyped as well?
If a seller has 2 of them (used) on display - does it mean that they are overpriced?

Price increase is predominantly due to eurjpy and usdjpy rates. Rates have significantly increased and as a result dealers buying watches from Europe are passing on the jpy depreciation to end clients.

Don't think we'll be seeing prices as low as they were last year and in previous years when jpy was record high.

Best get your buy on!

Cheers!

Now you are talking about a totally different commodity first Comex watches and the double and single reds they were not made in there thousands,or possible many thousands like the LV. If one dealer has 4 LV in a case irrespective of price, he is hoping to make a fast buck on the generated hype. But like I said if the LV was the must have watch surely they would have been snapped up or perhaps they are well over priced. And would doubt if many dealers would have two Comex subs on display same for the single and double reds.Although there are dealers that deal in these specialist watches but doubt if the LV is high on there list of must have watches. And would doubt if any modern day Rolex LV or whatever will command prices like the Comex or single double reds in proportion to price paid back in those days when new.

in the UK they've also gone up in price but none of them are selling

there are no buyers at those prices

unless it's a full set Y an LV should cost from £4-4700 depending on condition and what it comes with.

buying a stickered LV and removing the sticky bits will cost you £2k.

Well, you usually emphasize that the Sub LV is just a standard sub with a different dial and bezel insert. Red Subs/SDs and Comes are simply off-the rack watches with a certain font/-color.

And as far as I remember the red Sub was broadly available in the 80s - but not many people did really like it.
So fundamentally - if we are not talking about rarity - red Sub/SD and Comex watches are highly overpriced/hyped, agree?

I may assume that Erik Ku or other high-profile dealers will disagree.

And I am sure that you won't find many dealers (regardless at what price) who have 2 fully-stickered Sub LVs available for sale.

I have been trying to find one in HK some time ago - not a chance.
So, I'd say that it's a good dealer and not necessarily an overpriced offer.

are you moving back to the states? if so, how many times will you travel to/from before moving back? if relatively often and to the same destination, maybe bring back one each time and put them in a bank safe deposit box?

Well, it is a current model and not a classic discontinued like the original LV...thus there is limited demand as more are made and sold everyday.

Indeed so, first hand impact from Abenomics... Jpy-cross rates increased by more than 25% since last November.

Things for us in Tokyo (or at least those paid in JPY) will only get more expensive as yen continues to depreciate.

Happy Friday and as they say here, kyou mo gambarimasho!

You picked a bad time to try and sell a watch in Canada. With all of these "seized at customs" threads, I think a lot of people are scared off.

I was interested and scared away!
