Daytona mystery - Did the silver dial recently change???
Hello,
I'm interested in buying a Daytona 116509 White Gold with Silver Dial. I tried one out recently at my AD and I noticed that the markers at 3, 6 and 9 are much smaller (about half of the size!) of the markers of the same watch on the Rolex website. I have included pictures of both watches. I noticed the same differences when looking at some 116509's on chrono24. Can someone please enlighten me about these dial differences? Is the dial with the small 3, 6 and 9 markers an older dial? If so, I would be surprised as the AD where I tried the watch sells a lot of Rolexes so I expect him to carry only the latest models. On the other hand, the Rolex website should have the latest watches pictured as well... Is there somewhere an overview of all (historical) Daytona dials?? Thanks! |

I can't say I've ever noticed but I believe the images on rolex.com are all photoshop touch-ups so I wouldn't take what you see there too seriously.
For example: This is the real dial: And this is the one on the rolex.com website, they look very different. It almost looks cartoon like: |

No difference in the current era Daytona silver dials - just differences in picture exposure from different websites.

New real life photo's to illustrate Daytona dial mystery
Thanks for the replies, but I'm sure it's not due to exposure differences or because of photoshop touch-ups.
Below are two real life photo's from chrono24 where you can clearly see the difference again in the 3, 6 and 9 mark sizes. Who was some insights into these changes? Could it be that we have to do with fake Daytona silver dials? Would be a major issue imo, ie some AD's would sell fake Daytona's (or at least with fake dials?). Thanks in advance |

What serial prefix is the one you tried on (with the smaller hour markers)? I believe that is a slightly older serial... I thought they started the larger markers with the V serials, maybe late M's.
Edit: does it have the older styled clasp? |

Also, it's not uncommon for a watch like that to sit around for a cpl yrs. If it were me, I would like a hefty discount on it, or ask for a new Random serial.

Since reading this post I've looked at some of the WG Daytona photos that I have and I agree that in some models the 3, 6 and 9 markers are either square or rectangular. I'm not sure which is older but the difference is noticeable. Now I'm also interested in knowing which is older, etc. Anyone?

Ok..the bezel is different.
And yours has stickers. Otherwise, they look the same to me.

You are talking about specifics, I'm talking about the fact that the Rolex images are touched up and look like artist renditions. All rolex.com images look almost like cartoon drawings. If you don't see it, I guess you never will so just ignore my post

The number make the dial very busy...prefer the stick dials.

Thanks for solving this mystery!;)
Any idea about when the change to the new dial took place? Did anything else change on/in the watch change or was it just that small 'marker' change? |
