Upgrade or buy a second watch?

Hello TRF,

Ive spent far too many hours online drooling at other watches and decided to buy a new watch to gain some wrist presence. Currently, I own a GMT 16710-Y.

Whenever I talk to my brother Fremstar I end up more confused. He wants me to buy them all ;)



So I turn to the forums for a more objective opinion.

I have a budget around 6-10k and narrowed my options to the following.

1) Selling my 16710 and purchasing a 116710. This would give me PCL's and bolder presentation on the daily wearer.

2) Increase the budget and purchase a President ala 118238 and keep my 16710. This would give me a daily and flashier option. I'm to that thrilled about spending a lot more.

3) Pick up another "new" tool watch with flair (hulk? smurf?) or even a Exp.

So, those of you who have been in my position... What advice can you offer? Thanks!

I like any option that allows you to keep the GMT. Your contact Sam is a knowledgeable Rolex owner- listen to him, buy another....

The GMT IIc-although a fantastic watch-is not going to give you more wrist presence than the beauty you are wearing. Keep it and buy something when you are ready and know what you want.

Before you make a decision, look around for a gently used YG DD 18238. Should be able to find one within your budget and keep the GMT, it's beautiful. I've had my 18238 for a year and love it more than I thought, my next is going to be a Coke bezel GMT, hopefully a 16760. Of course the Smurf would do it all and is my current grail, but I could never be a one watch guy. My 2 cents for the low, low price of nothing! In the end you'll know what's right.

Don't get rid of a classic. I feel you will regret it later. If you're looking for presence, then you cant go wrong with an ExII Polar (the polar wears larger I think) or a Smurf. If white gold is your thing.

If your looking to upgrade or buy another, just know you will probably never be a one watch guy. So, just let that dream go! :)

I vote for an Explorer, 1 or 2 (and, if 2, the white dial)

Then save for #3...

you have a great watch (and serial) that holds a special place, you can get a different one but not better!

I like the Coke. Keep it.
The LVC or even a ceramic GMT would be a good addition. The ceramic model GMTs are different enough to justify owning both.

If you can add then add, if not then do what you have to do to get the watch you want. The Smurf would be my choice but you said your budget was $10K, increase the budget and get the Smurf.

Keep the GMT, save a few more then get a dress watch, you already own tool watch.

Keep your 16710 and add a Submariner or another classic tool watch. First and foremost--go try a bunch on and see what sings to you most regardless of what anyone here thinks as taste is subjective and only yours matters in this case!

OK hopefully by now you've been set straight and you won't let go of that 16710. So either your budget is $6-10,000 or it isn't. At that price you're wide open for stainless steel. My vote is a 114060 if you like the new stuff or a 1680 Red if you want something vintage. I held in my hands yesterday a beautiful 1680 Red that was right at $10k although I think you can get one cheaper. You can probably find an older Day Date on a strap which I personally think is a great look but admittedly not as nice as on a bracelet. Good luck with your decision and remember what we think is unimportant!
