I've enjoyed the watches I've worn very much, but I feel it is way to passive an interest to me to term it as a hobby. How about the fact that I wear it when I am enjoying my hobbies?

That's me too. I'm very interested in watches, and I like learning about them but I'm not very knowledgable about them yet. I only have three decent watches, so I'm not a collector, and since I don't flip them, I'm not a trader. I just like them and enjoy chatting on TRF.

I'd consider a hobbyist to be someone like Jocke who has a wheelbarrow full of Rolexes and other fine watches, AND can take them apart and work on them. I'm a gun hobbyist. I shoot Sporting Clays avidly but unfortunately not very well, and I have quite a few guns, and I can work on guns and perform basic gunsmithing and mods. I also reload every centerfire caliber that I shoot. I'm nowhere near that level with watches. I only have three and I just like looking at them and chatting about them.

I have another hobby: Collecting Dunhill pipes, and I have over 200 of them.

But lately, Rolex watches seem to beat my other hobby. I spend much more time on these forums than on forums for pipe smokers.

Sometimes I have considered giving up smoking. I did some calculating. If I sold all my Dunhill pipes, I could pay out my mortgage, and buy a YG DD, an SD and DJ, plus have some money left. But I am hesitating to do so since some of the Dunhill pipes I have are extremely rare examples from the first decade of the 20th. century. If I sell them, I will never be able to get them again.

No. I wish I would be able to refer to it as a hobby since it kind of goes hand in hand with collecting, doesn't it? I.e, you have to have a collection in order to develop your collecting into a hobby. For now I'm just a dude with a couple of watches and a couple of books about Rolex.

Somewhere between a hobby and an addiction. Honestly cannot say what the triggers are, but a Rolex watch makes me smile.

What about you..

What is it about the time-piece that gets your motor revvin

Since I have become the proud possessor of my blue face diamond dial DD timepiece, I have lost a certain amount of interest in my other watches.

I have to force myself to put it back in its box sometimes, to wear other lesser breed models, then sneak a peek, to boost my morale!!

For me, my boat has docked!!

I am a hobbyist. I own two Daytonas.........and would like to sell the TT one. The one thing that always brings a smile to my face is that little perpetual motion machine (well, almost) inside the case. A marvel of engineering and visual execution.

For me, I would say is more of an obsession than a hobby. To enjoy I do not have to have every watch made. I can enjoy reading and researching the history and background of watches, still buying a few does add to the obsession.

My hobby, I collect diecast cars, mainly early Hotwheels and Matchbox and other car stuff. This takes up a small room and then some. Also my xbox would be a hobby for me.

Please do not just consider giving up smoking, DO IT!!

I know how difficult it is but let's face the truth here, you are a junky, as I was.

All the stories about "I am only a social smoker", etc., etc., are just rubbish!!

I was an addict, plain and simple. And a pipe, well that is awful.

Unadulterated nicotine and tars, etc.

Thank heavens, smoking is becoming anti-social.

Why am I so dictatorial in all this, well, I smoked for many years and although I have not touched tobacco for 20 odd years, it has left me with a terminal disease and it 'aint funny.

If you can find someone to buy those pipes, make out like a bandit, if you can and use January, 2008, as your resolution to quit the filthy habit, please!

I make no apologies for the above because it may save your life, OK?

Antony

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, Antony!

I might give up smoking, but I am not sure I will sell my pipes. I have spent over 20 years collecting Dunhill pipes, and they are insured for DKR. 1,150,000 (US $ 290,000). I am considering selling the whole lot for a third of the full value, but still it would make a huge vacuum in my life.

My love for watches spawns from the fact that it is the one peice of jewelry that actually serves a purpose.so no matter what you do to your watch, like add diamonds, rubies etc.... it still is an integral part of your attire-your watch.

Collecting, or the hobby is all about the object of your passion/obsession.

I have more watches than I will wear....but, like Bo's pipes, I've spent many years with them and they are part of the family.

I do not expect to ever sell them, that will be for a future generation, but I will enjoy them while I can; otherwise, what's the point ?

I will probably gift one, some, or all to a grandchild or other soul who I see a spark in....at some point in life....but that's a long time from now..

I have a lot of varied interests, of which watches are definitlely one. Is Rolex a hobby? Well, I only have one right now, so I'm not sure if that qualifies. What I do love about fine timepieces is the remarkable engineering, complexity, skill and precision that goes into them.

As machines, they are unparalled in my opinion. If machines can have souls, then mechanical watches have them. I get an amazing, happy feeling every time I strap one onto my wrist and I simply marvel at the tiny machine whirring away on my arm.

I also love the history behind them and that they represent the very finest of what man is capable of, like fine art, wine or even a perfectly struck baseball by a Major League hitter.

So, a hobby? I'm not sure, but I do know I will acquire more, and that I will enjoy every one of them. I'm not a flipper, so the watches I do buy will be with me for years to come, to be enjoyed and savored the entire time.

I take comfort in that thought.
