Yup. Rolex shouldn't be concerned. People are going to buy Rolex watches anyway if they are into high-end quality watches.

The day Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Lexus, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Chanel, Hermes, Burberry, Tiffany and Co., Private Jet makers and luxury yachtmakers etc etc... the day these high-end manufacturers stop making their products for sale then Rolex should be concerned.

Luxury watches certainly have function but they are far more akin to jewelry than they are to functional devices.

A plastic encased circuit board will never replace a jewelry item.

Maybe to you they're more like jewelry. I'm far more interested in what's inside my watches, then what's outside. I don't wear any "jewelry".

Smartwatches are going to be extensions of out phones/tablets. Think about it - Dick Tracy used his watch as a phone and it is surprising it has taken this long for it to happen. We will have out phone/tablet on us (phones are getting huge and are not quite hand sized any more), but basic call and text function will be on our wrist. Add voice command to the watch and it actually makes a ton of sense.

Most people will only wear a smartwatch because they are equalizers (think Prius - just as likely to be owned by a wealthy person as a person of average means).

Personally, I will still wear a nice timepiece and wear a smartwatch on my right arm if it comes to that! 1 - because I like watches and 2 - when the net goes down I will still know the time!

I just can't take the smart watch as a threat to the luxury watch market. First off, the typical consumer is not going to invest the money in a precious metal, diamond dial, or even 316 or 904L stainless iwatch because the watch itself has a fairly short life span due to the unrelenting march of technology. So smart watches are probably always going to be plastic cased units, on plastic or rubber straps (OK, so you might buy a leather strap).

Secondly, I'm not convinced the smart watch will even replace the phone because tasks that are better done with two hands (or two thumbs), like operating a keyboard, cannot be done with a wristwatch without taking it off. And unless your iwatch is the size of an iphone, it''s not big enough to have the receiver at your ear and the mike at your mouth.

If anything, smart watches will bring in some people that have gone without a watch because of the phone. And as their income and tastes increase they will enter the luxury watch market. It will be a Rolex on the wrist and an iphone30 in the back pocket.

High-end watches for men is a statement- that I have arrived, that I am a successful and I can afford some luxury in my life. Some men could care less about "male jewelery" or the extravagance of high end watches and might fit very well into the niche market for the iwatch or the other clones that will surely come along.

Watches for men are like a piece of jewelery without all the bling, at least for most of us anyway. If it was not, we would all be wearing $50 quartz watches. The high-end watch market won't be affected at all by the iwatch or those that follow.
