You guys might like to know - I found a forum called fedoralounge, which has two threads devoted entirely to military peacoats. One is a sticky that gives loads of information to help you determine when your vintage coat was made. In fact, I found out mine is closer to 1952, which makes me love it even more.

Lisa, you're probably right, I just saw that forum.Very informative. Those serial numbers can be a bit of a mystery.I guess there is a "transitional" period, which is quite rare, the black corduroy lined pockets.....crazy pea coat junkies eh?Sound familiar?

Sounds like it's time to start a TPCF.

Not as exotic as some but I quite like mine from Jaeger.
It looks rather more grey from the photo, in life it looks more black, it has a herringbone weave.

I have two navy blue peacoats. One from Brooks Brothers and one from Burberry. Love them both!

I think I bought mine and my girlfriend's at the time at an Army Surplus Store 15 years ago. $35 bucks each.
