2. Immediately look for another watch/grail.

3. Totally lost interest in other watches except that grail....happily ever after.

A grail is a watch you will never be able to have...That being said, I am a step 2 person.

....the one you got wasn't really ever your grail then.
if you got it, then it is the center piece of your collection, everything else is an add on, it sits on your watch throne. I might be even reluctant to wear it.
Grail is grail, attained or in the AD.

That's how I see.

I haven't gotten the "grail" watch yet. And probably won't for a while. I'm okay with what I have... but admittedly, my addiction is forming into something new and positively emotional for me.

I have gone through this with cars. In my mid-30s as I was climbing the corporate ladder, my grail car was a new BMW M3. I had been driving Bimmers since 1992. And after I got my grail M3, just a few months later, wanted more, faster, better, and more expensive. The emotional drive continued for many years. And after acquiring a few more sports cars the addiction was finally broke when my Son was born. It was time for me to let the sports cars go and think "differently" about what was more utilitarian. And they way I drove those cars, was surely to put me either in the hospital or worse. And I couldn't do that to my Wife and Son.

Nonetheless, the shift was positive and although I may not own M3s anymore, I have a vehicle that I feel is as good and fits the needs of my counterparts. Maybe the same thing will happen with watches, who knows. But I will admit, after getting my first Rolex, everything else I put on my wrist, in my humble collection, is feeling, well... a little passive.

So I've decide to liquidate my humble little collection and put the funds towards another Rolex.

For me, what people tend to refer to as a grail is just an aspirational purchase.

But once it's achieved, your horizon's inevitably change and something else becomes the focus of your attention.

IMO, a "true grail" is most likely to be a completely unobtainable purchase that may take decades to achieve, if indeed it ever is...... or more likely requires a lottery win or dramatic change in financial circumstances.

But.... clearly, if ever achieved...... it's got to be No.2........

I was in #3 for quite some time, after i got my Daytona. It was something I had wanted since high school and many, many years later, finally purchased.

More recently, however, I've found myself being interested in "lesser" watches from some of the little boutique shops. I would not call these grails, as they are easily obtainable from a cost standpoint. They also do not fill me with the same feeling of contentment that my two Rolexes do. But, they scratch an itch for something new and interesting and give me that "different" watch to wear, when I so choose.
