As for others, the way I see it the OP is looking for suggestions for his daughter as she is the one who wants to buy her boyfriend a gift. I think a nice Movado would be nice if he likes dress watches and a Bulova if he's more into sporty timepieces, as far as I'm concerned they both have nice models with reliable movements in them.

A suggestion...get him a gift as a wedding present, not an engagement present. He will always cherish it.

I have a colleague who is close to 70 who wears an old gold Omega dress watch every day to work. He said it was a wedding present from his father-in-law (now deceased). My colleague and his wife got married about 45 years ago. He cherishes the watch.

Tough crowd is right I'm not sure half the posters read the thread. I recommend Swiss army in that price range or seiko if you find one you like within the price constraints. Tag would be great but I think they are a bit more than 500 these days. I think the OP is likely a good enough judge of character to know when it is right to give the man his Rolex. Let him decide that.

I'd look into the seiko divers (SKX series)... can be had for a couple hundred and have proper mechanical movements that everyone seems to love. They are sharp looking too!

The photo is a shotgun shell with his name on it.

I would give my nice watches to my daughter too... Regards the gift, I really like oris. They might be over 500 though. If you want to stick around 200, I would pick a digital watch like suunto. They have cool models.

It's all about buying right, at the Movado outlet you can get a Movado 800 series chrono for 500, the new Movado Bold series has a bit of flash mixed with the classic Movado design and they are relatively inexpensive 300-800. Tag heuer is never a bad option(after looking at movados for years my first quartz watch was a tag) little above $500 you can get an oyster precision watch head. I just got a speedmaster for $750. Check Craigslist used, see if Movado has a factory outlet near you. Costco also has a pretty good selection for your price range and they have many brands

I know that this is a few days old, but in the $200-500 range, I would look at hamilton, or a company called Lum-Tec. They make a very nice watch for the money, are made in America, and are limited runs.

I would be more inclined to give him something like a Seiko automatic dive watch. I would save the Rolex for your daughter. 21 is pretty young. I'd definitely wait until they are engaged or perhaps married.

Are you opposed to buying a used watch? For the age range, I would recommend a Baume & Mercier, sometimes you can find the Hublot MDMs for a good price, or Tag Carerra (full disclosure, I hate most Tags).

Honestly, for that age range, I would recommend a fashion watch more than a "timepiece." My boyfriend has a couple Fendi, Gucci, etc. watches that he wears while he works, etc.

Obviously, I don't know the guy but I don't think a lot of younger men can appreciate a quality timepiece (yet). Honestly, a lot I hear from people even my age (later 20's) is that Rolexes are still "old man watches."

I would even venture to say that she would get a better reaction by buying him a nice pair of cufflinks or a bracelet. I bought my boyfriend Cartier cufflinks a year ago, a David Yurman bracelet this year and he wears them all the time.
