Timepiece Dilemma.... what to do?
So….. I’ve been deliberating for some time over getting a new timepiece. I have a Polar “M” Explorer II, that I like and feel like a Million Bucks where I wear but Love and have always wanted a Sub (Specifically a Sub-C or GMTII-C)
So herein lays the dilemma. Do I trade up the Explorer II.. Come out of Pocket the difference to get the watch I love.. I want to build a collection, and worry about regretting the decision to part with my first Rolex. I’ve also been toying with getting something less money to add to the collection ie. Tag, Bell & Ross, Older Datejust, etc., but worry it would be money wasted since I want the Sub Unfortunately my current financial situation will not allow me the ability to just walk in and drop the $7k needed on what I truly love. I did find a local AD that allows 6month layaway (hummm)….. So have you guys found yourself in this predicament, and what was your Decision? Regrets? Action?..... Cheers. |

Tommy, I would pass on the layaway plan...buy/trade what you can afford. Unless that Exp II has some deep sentimental value, I would go for the watch you love and sell it and use the proceeds accordingly. Good luck mate.

Its your call but in your shoes Id get the Sub-C in a heart beat. if you regret you can always get another exp down the road since you can still find brand new ones available.

I would find the watch you want and buy it from a Trusted Seller. There are a lot of them in So Cal and all are willing to meet. Decide who has the best deal on what you want and PM them. There are also a lot outside CA. I have had a pleasant experience with two of them.

Unless it has some sentimental value such as being a gift, I would sell or trade the Exp2 to funds what you really want. It's not like the 16570 is a rare piece - you could easily replace it down the road if you change your mind.

If you have a strong attachment to the Exp II keep it and save up for the Sub (bearing in mind that the MRSP may increase while you are saving)
If you decide to let the Exp II go, try to sell it privately as you will get more than if you trade it Try not to make a decision in the heat of the moment - take your time and think it through carefully

I very much doubt you will find anyone on here endorsing any type of credit; we all love watches, but surely they are not worth going into debt for in any way. I would love a WG Sub but have ordered a TT Sub instead because whilst I do have £25k to spend, it would use up more of my cash reserves than I would feel comfortable with. I certainly would never go into debt for one.
Once you get the Sub, the Exp will spend all it's time in a drawer and only get worn once in a while because you feel you should. That scenarios surely isn't worth taking on any kind of credit for? The other watches you mention are nice enough, but they are not what you want...and eventually you WILL sell the Exp I suspect. Let me try to make this easier for you...answer the following questions: 1. Does it sound sensible to take on credit so that you can keep a watch in the drawer? 2. Does it sound sensible to go without what you want to avoid selling a watch now, and it's one that you will eventually sell anyway? 3. Does it sound sensible to have two watches that you don't want, when You could have one that you do? 4. Does it sound sensible to sell a watch you have outgrown, to buy a watch that you've always wanted? I would hope that you only answered yes to one of the above questions, if you dd, you have your answer. Alternatively, you can look at this another way... You have a girlfriend you got together with because the girl you really wanted wasn't an option at the time. You like you're girlfriend, but you have outgrown her, and by chance, the love of your life, has now become available. Do you... A) stick with girlfriend for misplaced sentimental reasons and get a mistress on the side...still watching the one you love from a distance? B) take a chance and keep current girlfriend but start up with the love of your life, knowing it could end in tears all round? Or... C) do you part company with girlfriend with happy memories of some good times, enabling her to end up with someone who loves her more than you can, whilst you start a new life together with the true love of your life? The process is emotionally difficult to execute, but the decision is actually very easy!! |

Thanks... A lot of strong arguments here. Seems like selling one for another is the most viable option. The reason I was considering the layaway option is the AD would lock the price in. no interest etc., just pay it off in 6 months.
Token74, your are right. Once I have a Sub, its likely that the Exp will hardly get worn. |

Try the Sub on your wrist and if it's the one, trade.

You say you want to build a collection. Don't build a collection of cheaper watches just because you can. However, if they are pieces you really want then go for it.
However, I sense you would like both Rolex models in your collection. If that is true I would keep the Explorer and save to buy the Sub. They will be around for a while! To have bought the Explorer, then sell it, then possibly buy another, seems a good way to burn cash to be (unless you are very canny).

My first watch, along with many others, is long gone. You can always buy the same model back down the road. Go for it.

I have sold watches that I wish I had kept. If you like to have a few options I would put the sub on no interest layaway and pay it off in six months. At the end of six months you will own two paid for rolex watches. It sounds like anything other than the sub would be a compromise. I would not buy more affordable watches in lieu of the sub. If you do you will not be at rest. Good luck.

Trade with a trusted seller. Get the watch you want and if you want your first back save for it. Life is to short. Don't over think it , get what you want.

Everyone that has answered you is on the same page and I am with them. Sell the Explorer II and get the sub if that is what you really want. Don't buy on credit and don't waste money on a watch that you really don't want. I wouldn't worry about locking in a price by doing the layaway thing. Save for 6 months and buy from a trusted seller here and you'll still come out ahead even if the prices do go up.

If you love the sub... No matter how attached you are to the exp Ii, once it is gone and the sub is on the wrist, you will have moved on I guarantee it. It's a watch not a wife:)

At least the layaway thing isn't an interest charge.
But if you take it, no chance of any deal. For me, sell the Exp and buy your sub. From where? Up to you, entirely. Have a look at what can be had here, and have a solid chat to your AD when you're ready. You'll likely be pleasantly surprised. Good luck! |

I vote against trading the EXP II away...in your own words you said you felt like a million bucks when wearing it. Odds are, if it's gone, you will want it again some day. Especially after the honeymoon with the sub is over.

It sounds like you prefer the Sub. Trade. The Submariner is far more beautiful than the white dial Explorer II imo.
