I have owned both. It depends on what kind of music you are playing, what you are playing it through and what you are trying to accomplish.

I play rock, southern blues, 1970's ZZ Top stuff......etc. I can't get what I need out of any Fender / amp combination that I have tried. I wish I could because I love those guitars.

Put a Gibson Les Paul Standard or even a Deluxe on a Marshall Valve-state stereo amp; run that though a good sound board and I can gut you 75 yards. Add a BK Butler Tube Driver pedal (hard to get anymore) and some other nice accouterments and all is perfect in my world.

A good example of this would be Billy Gibbon's solo on La Grange, especially the riffs he does at the end of the song. Or the one he does My Head's in Mississippi.

Long live the Reverend!

By the way, I have seen Gibbons utilize a Fender or Gretsch on occasion, but not for long.

I hate that African hat.

...maybe it's time to show off other forums that TRF in not only know for the knowledge they have about watches...but musical instruments as well! Especially GUITARS! And with a lot of new members, I think it's just fair to revive this poll! Not that we are stepping to their level! All for fun!

I'm not a great guitar player, but I love PRS guitars. We have some incredible guitars at my store. Strats, LP's, and PRS's vintage and new. If anybody ever needs anything I can hook it up with a very nice TRF discount.

I have owned 5 Les Paul guitars and 1 SG. All of them required extensive work/setup to make them play and sound good. I liked them and they sounded great. I got rid of them.

I have owned 1 Fender Stratocaster (black body, maple neck), I did an electronics change out and pickup swap. It kills and the bell/piano chime is beautiful. My wife surprised me with the guitar over 25 years ago. I will never part with it.

I now Play Tom Anderson guitars. The finish quailty of all aspects of these guitars are second to none. As a plus, you can speak to Tom himself.

What pickups did you put in your strat? I did the same thing with a highway one once and replaced them with Texas Specials. They sounded great! Since you got rid of all your LPs, I assume that your vote goes to Strat...

Folexhater, I installed Lindy Fralins Vintage Hots 5% underwounds in my Strat. Yes, my vote is Strats. I really loved my Les Pauls (with Holmes or Jim Rolphs pickups), but I like the longer scale of the Strats. But when you need to play some Zeppelin, nothing beats a Les Paul!

Goodness, that's one old thread...

Gibson fan here, I've played on a Fender once and really enjoyed it, they're great guitars and my father much prefer them and their styles (although he never had one, only look alikes from other brands) but I personally prefer Gibson models. I find their sound very good and some models have different pickups that allow you to get different and pretty original tones.

I've had Fenders almost exclusively for more than 30 years, and grew up listening to and being influenced by Clapton. But I have to admit that he did his best work back in the 1960s, playing a Gibson Les Paul with the Bluesbreakers.

Gave away 1 of my Strats to a brother-in-law. Other Fender Strat just been hybernating inside the case! Now I just can't put this one down! I think it's the most comfortable guitar ever built by Gibson...sitting or stand up playing!

Gibson... but I might be slightly biased!

Old picture from when I picked up my '61 reissue SG while in college:

Similar to a rolex, a fine guitar can actually appreciate in value... I could sell this guitar today for around a $500 profit 10 years later...
