Can We Put The Cost Of A New Rolex In Perspective ???
I keep hearing about the high cost of a Rolex, or that they are over priced for a watch....
Maybe we can come with some perspective.. As I mentioned in another thread, I have friends with more tied up in their Lionel Train sets and diorama than I have in a few watches.. I know that when I see a woman with a new Mink coat, or diamond tennis bracelet, they cost more than a new Sub. A good meal out once a week and you've paid for a Rolex in a short year.... I've got American Polished Torq-Thrust wheels and Good-Years on my old Mustang and they cost as much as a new GMT II...and the GMT will last a lot longer.. Look around a bit.... Let's put this Rolex thing into some perspective.....OK.... What do you think... ???

Funny how most of the people who ask me why I would spend soooo much on my watches....usually are smokers.....So I usually just reply back....You smoke, right?....and how for how many years now?............ 'nuf said!

Also a ROLEX is something that goes with you ... I mean you can put that kind of $$ in your home, remodelling, but you can't take your kitchen counter top with you ... yeah, the remodelling looks good but a rollie since it goes with you, it reminds you of all your dreams and hardwork .... I have even started carrying a loupe with me so when I sitting in my office, once in a while, I check out the LEC and it makes me go "YEAH BABY .. I GOT IT GOIN ON!!!" ....
I have friends who spend hundreds on little things but don't realize it and when you tell them your SD was $4500 they act like they got a heart attack ... but these nintendo games, PSPs, all kinds of other crap that I am not into, costs pretty darn much in the long run ... ROLEX feels a lot because the money all goes out in one chunk .... but in the long run, you come out ahead .....you can get substantial amount of your $$ back in a ROLEX if you have taken good care of it and what you can't get back, you realize it was worth the cost of ownership .... |

We all spend money on different things. Some people are willing to go out to dinner and spend hundreds of dollars getting fine wine or eating caviar. Others are into stereo equipment. My dad, for example, seems to have no problem spending $20K on speakers and another $10K on an amp, for example, but thinks I'm nuts because I want to buy more Rolexes. We choose, among other things, to spend money on watches. Hopefully, each of us are being responsible in taking care of other things, like having sufficient savings, saving for retirement, making sure that more immediate needs are taken care of etc.
For me, there's no getting around the fact that Rolexes are expensive. They simply are. The fact that the money may be spent on other things like fur coats or cars does not mean that Rolexes are not expensive. More than anything, I find more difficult the notion of buying multiple Rolexes more daunting and hard to justify. I've bought 2 this year with plans to buy one more, and that may get me a call for a Daytona. That would be 4 Rolexes in one year, or the equivalent of a car or who knows how much money toward retirement. Each of us makes our own decisions based on what we believe we can afford and what our priorities are. |

I used to be into boats. I could drop enough to buy two Rolex watches in a day without stressing about it. Now, I get all sweaty thinking about 5-8k for a watch. WTH? I'm pretty sure my diesel mechanic had a nice collection of watches @$70.00 an hour and the clock starting when he got in his truck in the morning. Anyway, my thoughts are if these were 1972 dollars it would be a lot of money...Porsche 911S base price was around 5500, VW $1995.....2000 square foot house $40,000.... but in 2008 it ain't much really. Ford pickups can run $40k... 5-8k for a fine looking, fine running little machine is really pretty inexpensive. But, we've become a throw away society and I think the great majority of people will never understand what a fine watch is, much less be willing to pay the price for one. I remember TV repairmen....had one to your house lately? TV breaks you throw it away and get a new one. Same with most other appliances and consumer goods. Anyway, good thread for a minor rant. I enjoyed mine.

I remember going to the drug store with my Dad and a handful of TV tubes to check them in the tube tester.

"I keep hearing about the high cost of a Rolex, or that they are over priced for a watch...."
Here's one I hear often. How does one justify buying a Rolex when there are other equally good, or better, watches out there that cost a few thousands less than a Rolex? How do you guys answer that one? |

A good set of aftermarket wheels and tires for your car runs about the same as the average SS Rolex.

I promised my girlfriend I'd quit for her birthday- I'll let this be my inspiration:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Lzp_qguwtag Whenever I sell a 2-way radio (side business) , I put $300 into my watch fund. I don't think a new Rolex will ever be in the cards, but a used one? Yes, yes, yes. |

And you can always get your money you paid for your Rolex back if you just wait long enough.

Best examples I can think of are cars and boats.
$30k car depreciates a Sub every year. Most people buy a new car every 3-4 years, because they want one--not because the old one is run down. Stretch that car to 6 years and you can buy a Rollie every 5 years. $25k boat that is used 3-4 times a year. Plus $1-3k year for service and storage. |

If you buy pre-owned like I do, then you usually don't have to wait :)
I have friends, family and clients into hobbies with more $ in than my wacthes. Everybody has their "thing."

Nope, but then again I still remember how to focus a CRT.
Frankly, I'm hard-pressed to work out why there's any need to put anything into perspective here. If folks can't work out the simple point that their brand new Toyotas are going to cost them the equivalent of my SD in service and depreciation in 40% of the time it's conservatively due for a service, why is that my problem?

I spend significantly more on fuel for my cars in a year than the cost of a new GMT - and a GMT will last for many, many years. Then there is the cost of servicing the GMT - but even that's a lot less than keeping just one car going . . . .. No, a good watch isn't expensive in the whole scheme of things and, if you want it to be, it's with you for life.

Oh, this forced me to do the math. For me, if I smoked for 50 years, my smoking expense would only be $45k / lifetime. I wonder where Allen Carr got his figures ? Maybe he thinks the average person smokes 2 packs a day. Maybe they do. Or maybe they don't buy their cigarettes from Costco like I did. haha. |
