For your discussion--68 Sub--rough condition
What do you guys estimate just the cosmetic repairs on this watch would run? That poor bracelet is a mess.

OK, this is a SWAG (Silly, Wild-a**ed Guess) based on the recent service of my 18K GMT Master 16758 at RSC New York:
- Factory movement service, gaskets & water/pressure test $495.00 - Refinish case and bracelet $0.00 - New dial (you may not want to do this in this case) $225.00 - New sapphire crystal $90.00 - New winding crown, monobloc $78.00 - New bezel $51.00 - New case tube $45.00 - New pair yellow gold hands $42.00 - New yellow gold second hand $21.00 - New 24 hour hand $21.00 Total for a watch that will look and perform as new: $1,068.00 with new dial, $843.00 with the old dial. My guess on the bracelet is that pins would be replaced as necessary for a nominal additional cost. HTH |

IMHO, nothing much has to be or MUST be done to a watch like this one:
Firstly, NEVER touch that dial or the hands, or exchange it/them! An exchange of the dial and hands would destroy the collector's value of the watch. I'd leave the bezel alone, too. A saphire crystal can NOT be added to the watch since it has a plexi crystal. Yes, the bracelet is a mess. I'd have classiswatchparts.com refurbish it. Probably, RSC would not touch the watch (too old), so I would have it serviced by an independant RSC like RSC San Francisco. Price: approx. the "standard" 500 US $. On top of that comes the price for refurbishing the bracelet. BTW: It's a GMT, not a Sub.

Well,..As stated a basic service will be in the area of $500 USD. Whether RSC will take it or not is a simple phone call, if not one of the Independents in either Chicago or San Fransisco is another choice. Also consider a good private watchmaker.
The hands are shot. I would replace them. In fact I'd probably have the case polished. The real issue is the bracelet. I thought a new TT jubliee was in the area of 2K. An alternative some collectors use is a nice leather strap. |

I recommend you find one in better condition and pay a little more for it as opposed to not knowing what you are getting into with this one. I know of a place that gets these on a regular basis.

Watch reconstruction or rescue is a hobby of passion..
If you take on the job of rescuing this very excellent GMT, the inner rewards are worth something.. Even if you set the value at 4 to 5,000, and it costs you a thou to refurbish and another 2 thou for a new bracelet, plus initial cost....won't it feel good....won't you have something of yourself invested in the final product.. If you are a businessman, and you want a quick return....it may not be worth it.. If you are a hobbyist, or enthusiast....go for it...You won't be able to wipe the smile off your face for weeks...
