Though a 36mm Rolex Explorer I would make me happy, happy, happy... I just don't need the attention it may draw from customers or employees. I've had displays of "wealth" come back and bite me in the ass.

Searching for a brand to fly under the radar, I've become interested in a 36mm AP-Royal Oak.

I really like 36mm for my day to day use. I cannot stand much more than that size.

Is there anything that should concern me about discontinued models?

I understand the servicing can be expensive and time consuming.

Is it more the passage of time and changing fashion that I see so few 36mm RO's? Very little discussion...

They are priced right to boot.

Any guidance appreciated.

I think the 36mm isn't that popular for two reasons. Firstly, the original RO from 1972 was a 39mm and in many people's views, that is the perfect size for the RO. Secondly, as you state, it is probably also a hfashion thing, that these days everything should be larger.

I would love to be able to pull off a 36mm RO. But unfortunately it is too small for me. There are many very nice 36mm RO's and usually at very attractive prices!

Have you considered a JLC? Great manufacture at value prices.

15450 is an option.
14790 is also an option.
15450 is particularly nice because of the display caseback.

If it feels right buy it.. Advice is good, but don't let others decide for you. I have a 41mm ROC and it's a fair size... I like it but I know full well I would've been happy with the 39mm too....I tried on a 36 annual calendar AP did from 2003 the other day, and although it was obviously smaller, it felt good on. Buy for yourself.

I like this suggestion. An RO may not always fly below the radar, but the model you desire should be much better than a Rolex. I'd go 15450 if you can swing it.

Thank you for the responses.

My budget has been busted. I'm likely buying a eye popping Midsize DateJust for my wife in the morning and have to make my Simple IRA contribution.

Rebuilding my nest egg will give me time to consider my choices.

Hopefully, I'll get a chance to go to Atlanta over Thanksgiving and do some window shopping.

The Vacheron Constantin Overseas is probably in the lead at this point.

I'm also interested in the AP MIllenary

I think the 36mm RO looks great even if it's not the classic 39mm size. In fact, it's probably the one I'd consider if I had to choose.

Service fees and time will be surprising to say the least but if you can afford it I'd say it's worth it, otherwise a JLC could indeed be a good option.

14790 or 15450 would be good roads to travel as far as AP goes.
Depends if you prefer modern or vintage.
