I believe the 5402 had a blue cast dark gray dial similar to today's Jumbo 15202.

My recollection is that white always beats out black but a fair margin when blue is included. And blue usually comes out on top of the three. So if it gives you any insight, black is probably only keeping up because it's getting more of blue's votes.

Or it could be due to the context of the collection in question...?

I tried them both on, loved the black. Hope to buy it in the future.

I think so. As Cory says white and blue are generally more popular here from past polls. I voted black here but would normally vote white. And would say then get the Diver, its mega tapisserie dial in black is my fav.

Black is whack...silver is gorgeous in person. But the blue is great too.

Voted black as the white will look huge on the 15400.

Quite a divided group: 51% to 49%

Black Dial = 34
Silver Dial = 33

I will try them on over the Christmas New Years week.

I went with black as it makes the whole watch pop so much more and gives it a sporty feel.

Both black and silver are great. I am going with the silver since i need something more classy + all my other watches are with black dials.
Also good thing with silver is that they have the 37 mm version (AP 15450), which does not exist in black (in current collection).
I am picking it up tomorrow at the dealer. This will be a good Christmas :)

It's still a toss up at 72 votes

Black Dial = 35
Silver Dial = 37

I had seen earlier polls where blue was favored for its exclusivity and historic nature by a wide margin by forum participants. Silver typically outscores black by a wide margin. As an earlier poster suggested, many participants who favored blue might be defaulting to black because its a dark hue and they prefer dark dialed sports watches? Alternatively, within the context of the other watches, perhaps the balance of two dark dials of the AP and Rolex are liked because they contrast the Breguet and Patek?

Myself, before trying them on (an important caveat), my sense are leaning to the silver dial for a number of reasons. This, of course may change once I try them on my wrist. I will also swing by the boutique to see if they have a blue one for context (my guess is not likely).

I vote for the "silver" one that actually should be WHITE dial on the poll!

But the most beautiful one is the BLUE that you seem not to be considering it.

It wasn't even a close decision for me--silver dial hands down! The black and blue are both beautiful in their own right, but the silver on the 15400 is a magical combination IMHO. Like you, I also have a Submariner, and while the watches are very different, it is nice to have a choice of black or white when reaching for something on a steel bracelet.

Good luck!

Silver. The light reflections off of the dial at different angles is stunning.

Yes but the SS 400 dial is actually more of a silver colour, whereas the RG is actually white.

Talley isn't moving @ n = 85

Poll is slowing and I doubt we'll reach n=100.

Black Dial = 40 (47%)
Silver Dial = 45 (53%)

Over n=60 is pretty darn good, but as close as this thing is, the difference still may not be all that significant... I'm shocked at how much black is holding on. Love it, but prefer silver -- and most polls agree stronger than this one. I still think it's because black is inheriting a disproportionate share of the absent blue.

Even though my first choice is blue - I'm going to cast a vote for silver.

Given that you already have a black face sports watch in the Sub if blue is out of the picture the silver makes more sense to me.
