Explorer 2 Low amplitude
Hello!
I haven't posted in a long time. I just got a timegrapher and tested my watches. On my 5-year old Explorer 2 (16570/3185), fully wound, I didn't get an amplitude of more than 270 on any positions. Dial-up gave the highest reading of 265-270 and varies from 220-250 on other positions. Other parameters: beat error= 0.0 - 0.2, 0 to -4 secs/day variation in most positions. Lift angle set at 54*. This watch has not been serviced but was regulated at second year as it was running +7/day. Right now, it's running at -1.4secs/day (2-wk average). Should I be worried with these results? Thank you in advance. |

I don't think you need to be worried at all. The results are well within COSC.
What you might like to consider is that you can have your watch regulated, even if it is within COSC, and also with your watch being five years old, the results you see may be the result of the watch inching toward to the time it will be ready for a full-service. Others will argue that you shouldn't fix what isn't broken and I would agree. I wouldn't worry about anything, except getting a service in a few years. You might also want to discuss your findings with a certified watchmaker.

Just enjoy it. I wouldn't mess with it at all.

Thank you for the replies and reassurance!
I shouldn't have bought the timegrapher. ;() I will probably wait for 2 more years before sending this for service. |

Sometimes TMI can be a PITA
But if you were regulating your own watches, a timegrapher is a useful tool for quick readings of the impact your work had on a movement. Your readings - 265-270 dial-up; 220-250 in other positions - are not worrisome. The pivots are perhaps running against the jewel bearing points with less lubrication than when it was new. The things is this: you're losing less than 2 sec. now - and low amplitude yields error rates that makes a movement run fast. So the time to worry about this one aspect is when you begin to gain many more seconds a day.

I couldn't agree more.
This happened also when I built a tube amplifier and bought an oscilloscope! Thanks. |

I use a oscilloscope quite regularly in my amateur radio hobby and they are a very useful tool in diagnostics and in repairing Transceivers RF amplifiers etc.But afraid today with watches like lupes and your time-graph they can be a Rolex watch owners worst enemy.
