Every day wearing AP
Hi,
Love the AP forum. For me I'm interested in the RO. Can anyone comment please on the 15202, 15300 and 15400 as daily wearers. I have a nice 116610lv and I like the reliability and durability of rolex. I think the genta design is fab but is it impracticable for the everyday? I enjoy the watch that is with me as I garden or swim but is also ok for work. Looking forward to owners thoughts. I guess I'm really wanting to hear about robustness from owners. I'd have to have a bracelet and I readily acknowledge I know very little about ap so please feel free to inform me. I'm ready to learn. Thanks in advance. Steve. |

They are robust enough, but the issue IMO is that they show marks/scratches much more due to the style of finishing vs your rolex.
If you are happy with that then fine, but i doubt you will be...... |

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I can live with scratches. It's the water proofness/general robustness that bothers. I like to keep my watch on for all events and don't like to baby it.

As per usual my query on the forum has led to me doing some looking around and I see that the 15202 might be considered less robust than the 15300 and 15400. Is that the case? Also what's the difference between 15300 and 15400 besides the fact that the 15300 has been discontinued? Just size of case and aesthetics but same movement?

I'd agree with #4. 15202 is quite thin and I'd consider it more fragile!
And yeah both the 15400 and 15300 have the 3120 movement. For what it's worth the equally new 37 mm version does too. Probably worth mentioning 3120 is also found in their dress watches too Personally I sold my RO 15400st because the bracelet was either loose or tight depending on the link in or out. It never felt "right"!!! Added to which playing with links in or out means going to boutique or ad as really hard to do yourself- not like rolex |

I wear a vintage ultra thin AP quite often and for most activities without any problem, therefore I personally don't think that a thin AP would be that fragile (keep in mind that my watch is not even a RO). I think the models you have chosen would make wonderful everyday watches, you only need to find out which one you prefer.

I'd hold onto the Sub for an everyday watch which is what I do. I also have a 15400 but it would only come out on weekends.
I'm sure the movement would hold up, but IMO, the Rolex would be able to handle a beating a bit better. |

A 15202 Owner's Perspective
I currently have and wear often a 15202 (new version with AP at 6) and can say that it certainly stands up day-to-day. I love how thin and elegant it is on the wrist, especially compared to the 15300 and 15400. I agree with others that due to the fine polishing and finished edges that APs tend to show scratches more easily but the thinness should not have any impact on holding up day-to-day. The famous 2121 movement is "ultra thin" and therefore has tighter tolerances which may make it less "robust" that the 3120 movement that's in the 15300/15400 and the Rolex 3135 movement but again, this is a tried and true movement that's stood the test of time over the last 40+ years.
The downside of the 15202 (Jumbo) is that the crown is NOT a screw down crown and therefor the water resistance (50M) is lower than any of the Rolex Oyster models. That said I do think it's fine for daily wear unless you're a dolphin trainer, commercial diver, dunk-tank operator, etc. All kidding aside, I wouldn't go swimming in it (that's reserved for my Submariner, Omega ProPlof, etc.) but it will certainly hold up to hand washing, dishwashing, rain, snow, splashing and an occasional dunk. The difference between the 15300 and 15400 is primarily the case size (39mm versus 41mm). Also, these two models do have a screw down crown but oddly the water resistance is still rated at 50M. There are also subtle differences in the design of the clasps on some models. I think the styling and history of the RO are classic and timeless and would consider this my go-to daily wearer with the understanding that it does have a few limitations compared to an Oyster. |

I agree, if you think of the RO as an haute horologie luxury timepiece then let the sub or any ss Rolex handle the tougher jobs leaving your RO more time to shine... literally

Considering both my AP's will have seen the Clearwater center for a tune up in less than 6 months of owning them... I'd go with a Rolex for dependability.

i wear my 15300 to and roo diver as my two daily drivers. Yes they show more scratches than my rolex did but the water resistance is fine for both.
Maybe keep the rolex for more sporty situations and use the ro for others. Heck i do everything in both of mine but would use the roo diver for swimming, gardening skiing etc. Remember watches are meant to be worn and enjoyed!

I can attest to the daily wearability of APs.

Royal Oaks are perfect daily wearers. The Jumbo 15202 is definitely less robust than the 15300 or the 15400. The perfect Royal Oak is the 15300 as it is 39mm like the original Royal Oak Jumbo and fitted with calibre 3120 that has a quickset calendar function. The biggest downside of the 15202 is the lack of quickset and the rapid change mechanism instead. Additionally I've always had issues with the crowns on the Jumbos as they are its Achiles heel.

I wear my 15300 every day, if you look at it under a loupe or bright light, yes you can see the marks, but under normal circumstances they are less pronounced than I expected.
I took my daughter swimming yesterday, and it was absolutely fine. |

i am certain ROs are more than fine as daily wearers
if you are going the ROO route, i would suggest you get a ceramic, ceramet, or rubber bezel |

I love my 15400 but I would not wear it for every occasion. The finishing is exquisite and scratches and dings are much more noticeable than on most other watches. I say keep your sub and wear it for your riskier situations.
