Any Golf Cart Owners?
I want to buy a used electric golf cart & just looked at a 2004 Western "Town & Country" model. I have no idea what I'm looking for, but the woman who owns it said it will need new batteries soon. (Costco sells them for $88 each (needs 7).) Couple of scrapes & scratches, etc. Can anyone give me an idea of fair price?
Thanks very much! |

I have several golf carts, is this a 36v or a 48v. 7 batteries is a little strange, unless the odd battery is a 12v accessory battery. Usually they have either 6x 6volt for 36volt car or 6x 8volt for 48volt. Costco and SAMs batteries do not seems to hold up very well, you need to look for Trojan or US Battery batteries. You will end up spending about 125-150 each.
All that being said to give you an idea. A used Club Car Precident 48v around here 2009 up would sell for about 2000 with new batteries or about 1500 with used batteries. Look for a local cart dealer, you can get great deals on lease returns. Private sellers always seem to think their cars are worth a mint. Club cars are all aluminum and last forever. I have both gas and electric, we used the electric in the neighborhood and the gas when we are traveling. Both are fully street legal, with license plates and insurance. When set up correctly they run about 28mph and seat 4. It's amazing some of the things you can do to a golf cart. Mine have stereos, turn signals, wipers, horns, seat belts, custom paint, all kinds of neat stuff. Hope this helps |

I have a Western at my house in the desert. The main maintenance cost of a golf cart is the batteries. Tires wear out as well but don't cost what batteries cost that need replacing every 5 years or so.
Westerns are good carts, made in the desert on the EZ-Go chassis. I like that they have trunk space and good, roomy seats. Mine also has the integrated ice chest that holds a lot more than the typical bolt on cooler. They're not quite as well insulated as a Coleman or Igloo say, but even in the summer in the desert I have ice machines at both #1 holes and at the turn of both my golf courses so refilling is no problem. I bought mine last year private party. It was a 2003 in excellent condition with brand new batteries (with the charger of course) and brand new tires. Paid $1,500 delivered to my house. So depending on how old it is, if it is in otherwise good shape I'd say around $800 - $900 is a fair price at $88 for the batteries. If the tires are going off deduct for those too. And make sure the charger is in good working order. Also make sure you are happy with the speed. Mine does about 21 mph top speed which is plenty for me. It is only run on the golf courses and private roads inside the gates of the community, to go to the pools and clubhouses.

Thanks very much for your advice! I have no idea what carts run new or used or what to look for, so your thoughts are much appreciated.
She wants $1200 firm so I may keep looking. I checked out some Craigslist ads tonight just to get an idea and I see some carts have A/C, stereos, etc. The cart I looked at is 10 years old so I wonder if these amenities are in newer models? I like the "retro" look of this cart & it's large front compartment "under the hood." T.Ferguson... can you recommend someplace that sells used carts in the desert (not too far from me)? Thanks again! |

$1200.00 is a fair price on that cart, it is not your standard cart. Make sure the frame is in good shape, and that the charger is included. Plan on about $900.00 or so to update the batteries. Retro cart kits like that are pretty cool.

Thanks for showing me how cool these carts can be!! I'll call her in the morning to see if it's still available & think I'll take a chance on it. Some big scratches from her pulling into the garage at an angle, but I can live with that.
It looked like it plugged directly into a extension cord with special end piece for charging? Would this be correct as she wasn't sure if there is a separate "box" to charge? (She's kind of senial.) Thanks again... |
