I also have a 1954 14ct gold JLC and that looks even more understated than the explorer because it is slim.

I think you have to feel at ease with your watch and wearing some chunky solid gold Rolex just sends out the wrong message. Stick with stainless as you will be far more relaxed in wearing it.

I don't think wearing a gold Rolex is "trashy" in the least-- that actually cracked me up .

What message is it that you think a gold Rolex "screams?"

I love the feeling of wearing a solid gold watch. A lot of ppl in the bay area wear gold, so a gold Rolex usually goes unnoticed. The Michael Kohrs brand is especially popular with the ladies here.

Is wear a gold watch- a patek or a JLC, but not a rolex. I find the rolex name carries a lot of bling on its own. I tried on a solid good gmt and it was very nice - but I can't imagine when and where I would wear it. So I walked away from a very good deal for it

I am relatively new to this forum and the last thing I want to do is cause WW3.

I am a typical Englishman in the sense I want to be able to walk the streets and not be noticed for what jewellery is on my fingers or wrist.

Everyone is entitled to wear whatever they want but there is a thing called decorum. Wearing a massive chunk of gold is sending out a very simple message - LOOK AT ME, PLEASE PLEASE LOOK AT ME.

I have a 14ct JLC that is probably worth more than the gold Rolex but the difference is that no one looks at it and that is how I like it. I have been wearing my Explorer 24/7 for 6 weeks and not one of my best friends as noticed it. That is how it should be. I buy into horology rather than jewellery.

I would rather someone take an interest in me for my personality than for some gaudy lump of metal hanging about my personage.

Having said all that, if wearing a chunk of gold makes you feel good, then do so.

Regards

Mick

So I assume then that you hate Brioni suits, would never drive an exotic car or even a Range Rover or Porsche and that your wife would never wear anything bigger than a 2 carat diamond etc.

To call a gold Rolex "gaudy" sounds so stupid.

I lived in London for a year during college and I must say that I saw quite a few gold Rolex on many men that were in no way "gaudy".

Edited to add: I mentioned this to my husband and he laughed and said, "love, the last thing someone is going to notice about you is your watch when you're walking down the street :)"

Like I said previously, if anyone wants to walk around dripping in jewellery, then they have every right to do so. The only thing that you have to accept is that some people hold the opinion that it looks trashy.

To quote an example, our Prime Minister (David Cameron) will not wear a ring or a watch in public because he thinks it may cost him votes. He is a wealthy man in his own right but he does not want to be seen flashing it around.

You mentioned cars, I drove Jaguars for 22 years but although they are a fast car, they are relatively understated. I offered to buy my wife a new 911 for our wedding anniversary but she turned it down flat because in her words, it looked shouty.

I just think we will have to agree to differ on this one.

Regards

Mick

I think Mick you have fallen into the typical newbie trap of caring too much about what others think. In this forum most owners know who they are and what they like and that is all that matters to them. Stick around and it will rub off and I'm sure in a years time your "trashy" comment will be rather embarrassing to you when you realise how many classy gentlemen you will come to respect here have these watches.

I completely understand what you're saying. I think there is another variable to this equation though. I don't think one pays attention to what people do, say, or wear, nearly as much as one usually thinks. Therefore, I think, if you like the look of YG, RG, TT, or whatever you should wear it without fearing people think you're seeking attention. Of course there are people like that, maybe a small percentage or maybe a high percentages but, I don't think most people care or notice, making it a bit of a moot point in my view.

I don't have anything but SS but I will, and I don't want to give off a bad 1st impression but, I refuse to not wear a grail for the fear that everybody notices my watch and thinks negatively about me when in reality, in my view, nobody's paying that much attention to what I'm wearing.

One of the (many) reasons why I would always rather live in France than in the UK :).

The French worry less about what others think and more about what makes them happy!

Is that why income is taxed so heavily?

Anyone with a gold Rolex has left by now and moved to London!

To be fair, I live in the UK for 6 months and 6 months in Spain.

I had dinner with the local Spanish Mayor and despite being rich and powerful, he wore some cheap over sized tat that looked brass plated. Now that was tacky.

Taste is taste no matter where you live.

I have dual citizenship in an EU country, so I told my husband that as soon as he sells the next company, we're packing up and getting a home on Lake Geneva and in France (Antibes) or somewhere in Provence.

I agree with all your comments about the EU and its beautiful sceneries, France, Switzerland, Italy etc...

But at the end of the day, I really miss the culture, amenities and customer service of Asian cities, especially my hometown Seoul. It provides the best of all cultures (Far Eastern, Italian, Turkish, Jewish IMO) and what I value the most are family values. Just my opinion

Back to the subject of Gold Rolexes, you will never feel out of place wearing one of these on the hip streets of Seoul.
And on a side note, you can't beat the services of RSC-Seoul where the customers are treated like kings!

the nightlife won't disappoint either
Some of these Asian cities you really need to know what you're looking for, I guess its the same for all places ;)

If you visit Seoul, recommend staying at the Shilla (Samsung Group operated)
Given the taste you have from what we discussed on NYC, you will love their Japanese restaurant ("Ariake").

Yes, I think between France, Italy and Ch., one is covered. France for fashion, food, culture, wine, art, jewelry, mountains and beaches. Italy for cars, art, fashion, wine, food, fashion, and beaches, and Switzerland for watches, skiing, and banking :)
