Icon13 The Price Is Wrong Bob!

I was sitting here with the missus on an uneventful Friday night when, scrolling through the guide, I see there's a million dollar Price Is Right going on. Since I like um, work and stuff, I don't really get to watch my childhood favorite game show anymore, so I flip over. Well they basically upped the ante on everything. Usually the contestants will bid on something that cost around a grand to see who gets up on the stage to play a big game, but last night they were bidding on motorcycles and stuff like that.

Anyhoo, here comes a SS DJ with white a white dial and roman numerals up for bid. Granted, a entry level Rolex, but a ROLEX(!) none the less. First person bids $600 Second person- $601 Guess what ends up winning this thing? $1501 Actual retail price- $3850

Then, to top it all off, at the showcase showdown this guy bids over $80,000 for a catamaran that was about the cheapest thing i've ever seen and couldn't have gone for more than $2k and a Cadillac convertible. Obivously he was way high, and the bad part is that he wanted to go higher but the audience screamed at him so he lowered it

This also got me to thinking about when I let my brother-in-law borrow my datejust with all the diamonds out in Vegas. About the 3rd day we went into a watch store and between that and my sub, we got attention rather quickly. As we walked out he said "How much do I have on my wrist right now anyway?" I said "Eh, if I had to replace it, it'd be over 5K". He couldn't believe it. He said he knew it was expensive but figured around 1K.

Do you think people have any idea what we really spend on these things?

EDIT: Crap, I just saw the other thread. Sorry, I did actually look for one I promise. Although, mine does have better detail

I would guess that 99% of the population have no idea, if they did they would think we were all crazy.

Sorry about asking, but I do not know this tv programme. What can be won if your estimation of the value of the item is spot on?

I'd say the winner made a VERY good deal! It was a bid, with a ridiculously low starting amount, but the winning bid was what it was. I assume this was an authentic Rolex Datejust???

Bo, the person with the closest bid, without going over, wins the prize. So the person with $1501 bid won the Rolex. If you get the price right on, you get a bonus of $500 or something like that, if I remember correctly.

Boy, I'd have been pissed if I'd been up there, given a price that was actually correct for the DJ, and told that I'd overbid...

Nope none at all. I had 2 people ask about my Sub, both wanting to know the cost, stating that they were looking for one. Both seprate occasions. Neither of them believed that the retail was over 5k. My guess, they thought it was a 1k watch.

one of my co-workers noticed my watch (a GMT IIc); he asked what it cost (we are friends so it was ok for him to ask me that); i asked him to guess; "$2k," he said.

At dinner last night my friend said he was looking for a new watch. I was wearing my 18K YG GMT Master at the time. I suggested he go with me to a Rolex AD in Vegas to see if he saw anything he liked.

His wife then broke in with, "No way are we going to spend $2,000 on a watch like yours!"

OK. Maybe we should start at Wal-Mart, eh?

I was out with coworkers yesterday evening. one of the guys really likes watches too. we were talking about watches and how they are one of the things we like to spend money on. Another guy starts a story about how nuts one of his former coworkers is because of the money he spent on a watch. The cost of the watch? $900.

It's all perspective.

Kinda like when my buddy borrowed my Mont Blanc pen and proceeded to drop it. I gave a fiery look and he said he'd buy me another $20 pen Maybe a refill
